IronMan Emotional Discussing 'Premeditated' Abduction Of His Mother

An emotional Cal Ripken said during a news conference Friday at the B&O Warehouse overlooking Oriole Park at Camden Yards that he felt his mother was targeted.

An emotional Cal Ripken said Friday he feels his mother's abduction was premeditated.

Ripken addressed a crowd of reporters and cameras Friday at the B&O Warehouse in Baltimore. Baseball's IronMan said Vi Ripken is doing well, 10 days after she was abducted at gunpoint from her Aberdeen home. He added that he is hoping to keep the spotlight on the suspect in the case.

Ripken said he believed the evidence indicates his mother was targeted.

"There was some thought given to it," he said. "The materials used to bind her were brought there, so there was a lot of evidence that shows somewhat of a plan, or that it was premeditated. Premeditated is my words."

Asked what it was like when he first learned his mother may be missing, the usually stoic Ripken was emotional.

"It was the worst feeling you could imagine," he said before pausing, with his eyes welling up.

Violet Ripken, 74, was taken from her home by a man hiding in her garage between 7 and 8 a.m. on July 24, and returned unharmed to her neighborhood, where she was found tied up in her car around 6:15 a.m. on July 25, police said.

Ripken said he received a call from his sister, Ellen, around 9 p.m. on July 24. She relayed that police had received information about Vi Ripken's car being observed with a woman tied up in the back seat.

"I actually physically got in the car and drove around," he said. "It would be like finding a needle in a haystack, I suppose, but it made me feel like I was doing something that evening," he said. "I think we were hardening ourselves for the worst possibility. I know I was."

"It was a horrible night," he said.

Earlier Friday, Ripken said that his mother has yet to return to the Clover Street home where she and Cal Ripken Sr. raised their family.

"Mom is doing pretty good," Cal Ripken said. "It’s a traumatic situation that she was involved in for all of us in the family. We’re trying very hard to come together to support each other. Mom is a very tough, strong woman to endure this, and she’s doing pretty good."

Why haven't the Ripken's upped the financial reward to find the perp? I heard a missing dog was worth $1000; Vi only worth $2000-the Metro CrimeStoppers automatic reward?

I think people would actually get the wrong message .Someone knows this guy those pictures are To revealing if he is local they'll catch him .I wouldn't be surprised if they were asked NOT to increase the reward .Kidnapping shouldn'ty be a for profit deal. Do you know how many dogs probably get taken because someone offers large rewards .We are dealing with a lot of Druggies and low class people anymore that would do anything to make a buck.

HURRAY for the person who called the police regarding a tied-up woman in the back seat of the car. That person needs to get a medal - tooo many people see things and WILL NOT even go to the trouble this person did. Somebody had to call the police and give them a description of the car and the license plate. By doing so the police where alerted to Vi Ripkin's dangerous situation. I cannot imagine what this poor woman was thinking.

So, are you all saying that if the police were called and given a description of a vehicle and a tag number and indicated that an elderly woman was tied up and mouth taped shut in the back seat and blindfolded, the police would not have tracked that caller? I'll believe it when they catch the perp. But, it doesn't sound like there really was one. Again--how could her Lincoln (even if the gas tank were filled to the top) be able to drive 1,200 or more miles within a 24-hour period and NOT run out of gasoline??? Seems some people will believe anything these days. And, that's so sad--especially when there are REALLY BAD CRIMES going on everywhere else in Maryland and not receiving even half of the attention that this case is receiving. I can understand if the woman was hurt; but, she was not. In fact, supposedly she was fed food and given cigarettes. Okay--maybe THAT was what hurt her the most. The cigarettes! Yep--time to call Dog, The Bounty Hunter!!! Maybe he can find this hardened criminal!

Oh--wait a minute here! Another clue. Cal Ripken, Jr. said he believes that his mother was TARGETED? That this whole ordeal was PREMEDITATED??? Wow. He just contradicted his own mother's statements (when she revealed that she mentioned the Ironman, and supposedly the guy had NO IDEA who the Ironman was or that she was the mother of Cal Ripken, Jr.). Because had he known who she was, don't you all think he would have asked for something (MONEY/RANSOM) or something? In fact, the police said nothing that THEY knew of was taken at all. So, let's see how Cal, Jr. explains THIS one away. There's NO WAY, if this alleged kidnapping took place, that CAL'S MOTHER WAS TARGETED. Sorry Cal--hate to destroy that big ego; but, even your own mother said the guy did not know WHO she was. So, there you have it folks. And, yes--of course, Cal wants to keep these billboards up for a very long time. The longer the Ripken name is up on a billboard, the more time in the limelight. Yay!

Really? Great thing about being an American is Freedom of Speech; shame there is not Freedom of STUPIDITY. What is wrong with people today?

Prayers to the Ripken Family.

Well, based on some comments here I would say there is plenty of "Freedom Of Stupidity".

One word for the crazy one: PROZAC. Let's see how this plays out first, instead of pointing fingers and making accusations. Most people should show great respect for anyone's Mother(s), whether they're rich or poor.

Of course it was premeditated. Did anyone ever think anything different? I sure didn't.

Sure, premeditated in the fact that this guy had supplies with him. Doesn't mean he knew who exactly he was going to grab. It sounds like the classic hold victim to use their ATM cards. Just glad she wasn't harmed in a worse way.

I am very happy she wasn't physically harmed, but being a victim of armed robbery myself, she may never recover emotionally...I still struggle 7 years later. My prayers are with Vi and her family

People can be so cruel. It's not about money. Wake up, if it was your Mother I sure bet you would feel differently. No one, rich or poor deserves to be held hostage. I can't imagine the trauma this has caused. I certainly hope this sick person is found soon. Just remember it could be your family member the next time.

I'm so sorry you think I'm cruel. I'm NOT cruel at all. I'm just VERY realistic. And, I've listened to every news program and read every news article on this "alleged" kidnapping story. You can all choose to "believe" what you choose. It IS a free Country. But, if this were only about a "kidnapping" case (which it is SUPPOSED to be), please tell me why EVERY article mentions all of Cal's accomplishments in BASEBALL (like his stats of over 2,000 consecutive games he played with the Orioles). Really? Who cares about that? What does THAT (stats about Cal) have to do with Vi Ripken's "alleged" kidnapping? Nothing. Remember the Casey Anthony case where she reported her daughter was missing and kidnapped by the babysitter? Some people can be so convincing. I was so amazed at the stupidity of ALL TWELVE JURORS in that case who came back with a "NOT GUILTY" verdict. Say people don't lie about kidnapping? Think again. Some do for whatever reason. And, this story just sounds too "fishy." Just saying. Not cruel--just logical. But, thanks for allowing me to express MY opinion. :D
