Chief Johnson: Assault Weapons 'Excessive' for Public

The Baltimore County police chief decried gun violence on WYPR's Midday with Dan Rodricks radio show.

Baltimore County Police Chief James Johnson continued his crusade against civilians owning assault weapons during a Thursday appearance on WYPR's Midday with Dan Rodricks.

The police chief said opponents of assault weapon bans frequently cite home invasions as a reason to possess them, but pointed out that there is no "serious chronic problem with home invasions" in Baltimore County.

"An assault weapon is an excessive weapon for the public," Johnson told Midday listeners.

Johnson further noted that home invasions are commonly connected to drug-related incidents.

"You see it from time to time," he said.

Johnson caught the national spotlight Wednesday when he appeared before the Senate Judiciary Committee for a hearing on gun violence. Conservative bloggers were put off when the chief, who started in his role in 2007, called National Rifle Association executive Wayne LaPierre's comments on tyranny "creepy."

"It was very clear that there was division in the room," he said on WYPR.

The full interview will be available on WYPR's website at a later time.

"pointed out that there is no "serious chronic problem with home invasions" in Baltimore County."

Is the frequency of a certain crime relevant to the right to keep and bear arms Mr Johnson? If there are no bank robberies should we remove bank guards firearms?

What an ignorant comment Mr Johnson. the right to keep and bear arms was not a right given to us by you or the Federal government so you nor anyone else can take it away. You are violating your oath to uphold the laws as they are by your rabid attempt to infringe on our rights.

Thanks, Chief Johnson, for saying what needs to be said. Of course, this article is going to soon be filled with absurd, illogical arguments from the gun advocates who seem to not really be able to come up with any new, real arguments as to why everyone should be allowed to own (and carry) assault weapons. I have yet to hear a rational comment being made by any one of them. I'm getting tired of all the claims about what the 2nd amendment was intended to mean by our founders.

First & foremost EDUCATE Yourself. Assault weapons are ILLEGAL for civilians to own because a Real assault weapon is what the Federal Agencies, Military & Police use because they fire Multiple Bullets with a single trigger pull or fire Continuously until the Assault weapon runs out of Bullets or they let the trigger go.

First & foremost Police Officials as well as Politicians need to call firearms by their proper name & stop referring to them as Assault weapons & misleading the public. An Assault weapon is what is used by the Police, Military & Federal agencies capable of Firing Multiple bullets with a Single pull of the trigger or Continuously firing until you release the trigger or run out of bullets. The True purpose of Law abiding American citizens owning the firearms in question is so if the Government be it State or Federal or both try to No longer Abide by the Laws that govern the individual state & federal government people would be on a somewhat equal fighting level to defend themselves against Tyranny of the Government & be unlawfully detained & or killed. The Police, Military & Federal agencies are the Only people that can legally own & use Assault weapons. The Only exception is if you are a Gun Collector & Obtain a License from the Federal government to own these types of firearms, which is a Very lengthy process & includes an extensive background investigation. Weapon use & storage have to meet Federal regulations & you are able to be inspected anytime the ATF "Alcohol, Tobacco & Firearms" wants to do a Surprise inspection & there is a expensive cost per firearm that falls into this category.

funny thing, assault weapons aren't accessible to the general public.

AR15s, on the other hand, are no different from any other semiautomatic rifle...and if they're going to ban civilians from having access, they'd better make sure the police don't have them either. police are civilians, too.

Newtown Calls for Armed School Officers

The Newtown Board of Education wants more armed police officers in the town's four elementary schools after the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary.

Last night, they decided to ask the town to approve the request to include one additional full-time Newtown police at each of the elementary schools in next year's budget.

Members of the board will meet today with state and federal officials about obtaining additional funding for security.

“Our parents are demanding of us that things are made safe and secure and certain measures are put in place,” Chairwoman Debbie Leidlein said. “So we’re being very thoughtful.”

Armed guard disarmed teen in Atlanta school shooting, says police chief

A student opened fire at his middle school Thursday afternoon, wounding a 14-year-old in the neck before an armed officer working at the school was able to get the gun away, police said.

Multiple shots were fired in the courtyard of Price Middle School just south of downtown around 1:50 p.m. and the one boy was hit, Atlanta Police Chief George Turner said. In the aftermath, a teacher received minor cuts, he said.

I have to laugh at you. Really I'm a fanatic? Why because I disagree with Chief Johnsons claims? First, I know the difference between what people call Assault weapons & what really are Assault weapons, especially since I have served over 10 years in the US ARMY survived TWO TOURS IN IRAQ. I know Cars, Knives, & blunt objects kill more people than Firearms do. I know why the 2nd Amendment stands for? I am not against improving the policies that are in place but the Extreme level Maryland wants to take against firearms & what Democrats in DC want will basically leave LAW ABIDING citizens defenseless against Criminals & heaven forbid the Government does attempt to become a Tyranny & declares Martial Law & Military & Police go door to door & confiscate you Legally owned Firearms like they did in New Orleans. I'm far from a Fanatic I'm a realist.

I have served this Country in & out of Combat as a member of the US Army. I'm Not talking about any Conspiracy theory. Where in New Orleans when National Guardsmen & Police went door to door Confiscating Law Abiding citizens firearms & leaving them defenseless against anyone that still had a firearm & wanted to rob & rape & believe me the Police starting becoming those individuals & I am speaing from First hand experience because I was down there with the Baltimore City FD. Bottom line the 2nd Amendment is in place to allow Law Abiding citizens to remain as equally armed as possible as the Police & military are in case the Government attempts to become a Tyranny so those that are armed can fight against those such individuals.

Timothy Byrd

1:58 pm on Friday, February 1, 2013

@FIFA No I am not Wrong an assault weapon is not classified as an automatic assault weapon or a semi-automatic assault weapon. It has to have the capability to fire multiple rounds with a single trigger pull or the capability to fire fully automatic which is what Federal agencies, Military & police use. I should know have over 10 years in the US ARMY & multiple Combat tours & unless your a current military member or ex military member which obviously you aren't or you would've know what a Real Assault weapon is. Your just like the un-educated politicians & civilians that want to claim they know more than someone that has had to use a REAL ASSAULT WEAPON. In actuality, there are more Powerful Hunting Rifles that are used compared the semi-automatic Assault rifles that everyone is so intimidated of because of it's looks.

Sorry I got into this one late after the name calling off-topic slurs started.
To clarify some issues first off. "Assault Weapon" is a term that was established by legislators to classify characteristics of some guns. The ability of semi-automatic firing is the common feature. Other characteristics have to deal with detachable magazines and hardware mounted to the weapon (Telescoping stock, Pistol grip, Bayonet lug).
Assault rifles define a specific set of characteristics with weapon performance. All assault weapons have the ability to select the type of fire sequence, i.e. Single fire, burst or full automatic. They also are magazine fed.
Those people that understand guns know the classification is vague and does little to address leathality of a weapon.
As an example, you can take a Remington 1100 semi-automatic shotgun that is commonly used for hunting small game and bird hunting that is not classified an "assault weapon". Install a telescoping stock with a pistol grip and it is now an "assault weapon" per the assault weapon ban. In doing this modification you have done nothing to increase the leathality of the gun. This type of modification is commonly done for hunters with physical disabilities.
To put some perspective on this in a comparison, Maryland recently passed laws specifically against Pit Bulls. People came out of the woodwork about how unfair it was to single out one bread as inherently vicious or dangerous. Rants like " Its bad dog owners not the bread."

I realize pit bulls have not gone in an elementary school and killed 20 children, but the logic doesn't stay consistent. The amount of damage and the amount of pit bull attacks warranted the issue be addressed in some manner. Pit Bull owner came out defending their animals , saying how loving they are and that their's is not dangerous and it is unfair to punish all because of irresponsible owners. Hmmm, sounds a bit familiar?
I recently got in to a debate with Clarence Mitchell IV on his WBAL radio show about why people need or should own these Military type weapons. Those that defend the 2nd Amendment point out the initial concern for citizens to be able to defend against a tyrannical government. C4 (as Mr. Mitchel goes by) made the argument that a citizen armed with an AR-15 would not stand a chance against an Apache Helicopter. To this I would agree however, I believe there would be a build up to the level of tyranny way before a President would order its military to fire on its citizens. Given that individual citizens that own weapons could form a militia to speak out against the tyranny and have firepower to back it. If you think this is far fetched consider what we experience here in Maryland with the single party government we have. We are the highest taxed state in several areas and they keep taking more and think nothing about spending more.

I find it fascinating that we are being maneuvered to keep our eye on the gun control issue..and another patch article is raving about how CCBC has invited Van Jones, an avowed communist and revolutionary as some sort of hero... a clean energy and human rights pioneer, in February as a guest lecturer for the President's Distinguished African-American Lecture Series. We are busy at the front door with the gun control maneuvers...and look at the interesting characters coming through the back door. Had to resign as a White House Czar...and is now landing on our community college campuses. Oh, sorry, this thread is all about gun control isn't it.

No Lorma. The thread is past gun control. It is fear and loathing. Consumed by "conservative" ignorant white (mostly but not always white) people that don't have a clue that the Chinese will eat their grandchildren's lunch if you don't get serious about funding a top notch public education system for this country. You are good at spreading alarm Lorma. Communists? Is that your real fear? Gays, blacks, foreigners? You rail for people that don't believe in paying their taxes. Anarchists. People that grab tabloid nonsense and half truths as fact and who ignore real facts and statistics. Guns are a societal and medical issue. The issue is not second amendment. You have let the kooks eat away at your other rights while being distracted. You don't utter a peep that your elected "conservative" politicians permit unfettered recording of all of your email, text, tweet and phone conversations. Or the lobby/politician industry that is where your real money goes. I think you have a right to bear arms - in the army. Not carry weapons of mass destruction in society. Is there a limit to the size of the gun you want - 30 mm? 55 mm? Do you want missiles too?

Think you're misreading a bit much into Lorna Roger...and how the hell can you determine black from white posters on these threads?
Lorna has addressed, (quite eloquently I might add), all of the issue that you just brought up....
Regarding your gun statements ...you left out the baa that most sheeple include.

Roger..looks like I have touched a raw nerve. Sorry, I tend to do that on occasion. You see me as,,Conservative = ignorant, fear and loathing with no clue. I see you lumping gays, black, foreigners into your assessment of anti-communistic viewpoints. Let us review: 1) Where am I "railing" FOR people that don't believe in paying their taxes. My thought is actually QUESTIONING folks like Tim Geithner; 2) Name the anarchists you are referring to; 3) As for "kooks" eating away at our rights...not sure if "kooks" is the proper description, perhaps quite intelligent and very, very focused might better describe them; 4) "Guns are a societal and medical issue",,yes you might describe them as such until the wolf is at YOUR door and you have no protection...mmmm; and 5) no uttered peeps...my peeps are about who dares to attack our second amendment, both through the front door and the back...the issue being the Second Amendment. All your snarling, squealing, finger pointing, anger doesn't change reality one little bit. As for the limit of weapons...well in my estimation, depends upon the forward march of those who would put usunder, darling. Freedom is our wonderful blessing...paid for in many ways with the blood, sweat and tears of our magnificent citizens...worth due diligence and high end protection. And finally, Roger, my interchanges have always been focused on both sides of the political aisle. I suggest you stop "railing" and do you home work, darling.

Thugs pick on a 70 year old man thinking they have an easy mark. The easy mark had great gun control.

Martin Luther King Jr. High School coach shoots attackers
"Police sources tell 7 Action News that a women's basketball coach from Martin Luther King, Jr. Senior High School shot two men who attacked him as he was walking two basketball players to their cars in the school parking lot.

Police sources say the coach was walking the two girls to their cars when two men allegedly approached and one pulled out a gun and grabbed him by his chain necklace. The coach then pulled out his gun and shot both of them, according to sources.

The man who shot the attackers was 70 years old, according to police.

One of the attackers was found dead in the median on Lafayette Boulevard, and the other was taken to a local hospital, according to police sources. We've learned that both of the men had attended the high school, and one had been recently expelled.

Police sources say the coach has a Concealed Pistol License and is reportedly a reserve police officer. They say he is fully cooperating with authorities."

THIS IS GUN CONTROL! Hitting your targets! If he was in New York with the tyrants there he may have run out of rounds to protect the two young women.
