Clean Bread and Cheese Creek volunteers have a habit of celebrating holidays by getting dirty and muddy.

After a successful clean-up effort on St. Patrick's Day, members of the group spent Saturday cleaning up the section of Peninsula Expressway between Merritt Boulevard and the Bear Creek Bridge, according to organization founder John Long.

For four hours, Bread and Cheese Creek volunteers partnered with volunteers from Friends of the Hard Yacht Club to comb the roadway, median strip and wooded area surrounding the expressway, looking for trash to remove.

Finding illegally dumped trash and bulk items wasn't difficult, according to the list of junk volunteers collected.

"In total, we removed 25 bags of trash, seven bags of recycling, seven tires, two couches, one end table and a box spring," Long wrote in an email to Dundalk Patch. "We would like to thank all the volunteers from both organizations for working so hard to make a difference in our community."
