A Baltimore County corrections officer is up for a prestigious national honor.
Michael Morris, who works at the Baltimore County Detention Center in Towson, was announced this week as a semi-finalist for the American Federation of Teachers' Public Employee Division Everyday Hero Award.
Morris, vice president of the Baltimore County Federation of Public Employees, is also a sergeant in the Maryland National Guard and a volunteer fire fighter and medic, according to a BCFPE press release.
Morris serves with the Rosedale and English Counsul volunteer fire companies.
His citation on the AFT website describes acts of heroism including following his uncle into a burning home at age 16 and preventing an inmate's suicide attempt in December.
Morris is one of four finalists for the national award. Voting is open on the AFT's website through Sunday, April 29. The winner will be honored in July at the organization's national convention in Detroit.
