Dundalk Chamber of Commerce Honors Award Winners

Gloria McJilton, Boulevard Diner, Thompson Automotive, Dundalk Patch and Del. John Olszewski Jr. were featured during the 2012 Gala and Business Awards.

More than 100 people gathered for dinner and dancing—not to mention a little bit of karaoke—Saturday night at the Sparrows Point Country Club for the Dundalk Chamber of Commerce's 2012 Gala and Business Awards cermony.

Chamber President Sharon Luette and manager Dotty Christy presented awards to five honorees:

  • Gloria McJilton of McJilton Nationwide Insurance Service and the chamber's vice president won the service award.
  • Thompson Automotive won the philanthropy award.
  • Dundalk Patch won the innovation award. I accepted the award on behalf of Patch.com.
  • Boulevard Diner won the image award. Owner Sam Tsakiris accepted the plaque.
  • Del. John Olzsewski Jr. won the president's award.

The event was sponsored by the Community College of Baltimore County, the Dundalk Eagle, McJilton Insurance Services, Mars Supermarkets, the Patapsco Bank, the Boulevard Diner and Patch.com.

Olzsewski and his father, County Councilman John Olzsewski Sr., both gave short speeches praising Dundalk's business community.

The party got moving on the dance floor when Steve Saradin and his daughter, Sheila Verardi, started swinging to the beats of the band 5th Avenue. It heated up when Sally Testani took the microphone for a rendition of "Mustang Sally." (See video.)

I have lost all respect for the Dundalk Chamber of Commerce following the award it has given to Delegate John Olzewski. The award, I have always thought, is given to someone who has done something outstanding for the community and who is a leader of some sort. Mr. Olzewski meets neither criteria as evidenced by his recent vote in Annapolis, which caused the passage of the gay marriage bill and its becoming law.

Had the Delegate been a leader, he would have continued to support traditional marriage and voted to preserve it. He had done this up to the very end when he succumbed to the pressure of the Governor, other members of the House of Delegates, and various persons who were permitted to give emotional statements at the hearings. He also would have voted the will of the majority of his constituents who don't want marriage to be changed. He did neither, showing a lack of courage and character.

I only hope that the DCC was unaware of the real Mr. Olzewski and that it didn't honor him despite his disregard for the will of the people he was elected to represent and the sacred institution of marriage between a man and a woman.

So they can't give an award to someone who supports gay marriage?

Absolutely not. Supporting the language and intentions of the 14th Amendment is not an act of leadership! ;)

I believe the Delegate once again put politics before principles! it's really no secrect that Senator Stone is considering retiring.........did the Governor promise that "appointment" for your vote Delegate?
Presidents Award?? For what? For not listening to the voters in his disctrict.......and mostly for really doing nothing to help the community!
Residents of Dundalk...........REMEMBER IN NOVEMBER!

First of all, he was selected to receive the award prior to the vote. Secondly, his entire career is not based around just one bill. Third, not everyone he represents is against gay marriage! Some of us are proud of him for following his beliefs and NOT caving into peer pressure.
