Dundalk Patch Athlete of the Week: Dundalk Wrestler Joey Doetsch
Each week Dundalk Patch will feature a local athlete.
Dundalk wrestler Joey Doetsch (195) will take his 24-2 record to the Overlea Invitational this weekend along with a surprising 11th ranking in the Maryland State Wrestling Association's individual wrestler rankings.
Doetch, a 3.0 student who takes Advance Placement classes at Dundalk, grew up wrestling for the Dundalk Hawks rec wrestling team.
“I learned so much from Coach (Mike) Young at the Hawks it really gave me a solid base to be successful now,” said Joey.
Doetsch's family has a strong wrestling background.
His older brother, Britain Doetsch, starred as a prep first for Curley and then Dundalk and now is an assistant coach for the Hawks as well as Our Lady of Mount Carmel.
“Joey wrestles a heavier weight class, but he has moves like a lightweight,” said Britain Doetsch. “He looks to intimidate his opponent, get him off-balance and take a quick shot. Once he gets the take down hes really technical on top. ”
His younger brother, Michael Doetsch, stars for the Hawks squad and is a six-time Maryland rec champion, a two-time New York Empire state champion, and is closing on on 1,000 career rec wins.
Joey admits that its not always easy being the middle brother, but has high goals for this wrestling season.
“My goals this year are to win counties, regionals and states,” said Joey.
Joey will be the number one seed at the Overlea Invitational this weekend.
Each week going forward, Dundalk Patch will feature a local athlete of the week, to nominate your favorite prep, rec, amateur or professional athlete.

In any athletic endeavor the key to success is not to lose your head under pressure.
It appears that Joey's opponent has just done that, or at least it looks that way.
I guess when your young and supple like that, your body is capable of withstanding those contortions.
