Gov. Martin O’Malley has appointed a New Town High School student to serve as the next student member of the Maryland State Board of Education.

Ebe Inegbenebor, a rising senior, will serve on the board from July 2012 through June 2013.

At New Town, Inegbenebor is president of the National Honor Society and is a math tutor. She is also a member of the varsity soccer team, the robotics team and DECA, which is an international association of marketing, finance, hospitality and management students, according to a news release. Outside of school, Inegbenebor is involved in her church’s Christian teenage ministry and volunteers in the church’s multimedia department.

“Being a member of the State Board is an accomplishment that I worked hard for for one particular reason: To use what I have experienced and the experiences of other students to foster positive learning environments in every school in the state,” Inegbenebor said in a statement. “Doing whatever I can to improve the state's academic standards and create equal opportunities in education for all races, regions, and socioeconomic classes are my priorities.”

This marks the second consecutive year that a Baltimore County Public Schools student will serve on the board. This past year, then-senior Nina Marks from Dulaney Valley High became the first BCPS student to serve in the position.
