Ruppersberger Vows To Fight for USNS Comfort
The Navy announced plans to move the naval hospital ship from Baltimore to Norfolk, VA.
U.S. Rep. C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger said today he would fight to keep the USNS Comfort from moving from Baltimore to Norfolk, VA next year.
WBAL-TV reported that the Navy would save around $2 million annually with the move from the Port of Baltimore.
But, moving the naval hospital ship would also be a huge blow to the Maryland economy, with estimates that it has generated $35 million annually for the state since being docked in the Port of Baltimore dating back to the 1980s, according to The Baltimore Sun.
Here is Ruppersberger’s complete statement regarding the Navy’s decision to move the USNS Comfort:
“The Comfort is a source of pride, jobs and tax dollars for Maryland. The Navy feels that this move will be better for their interests and bottom line, which I understand and appreciate during this difficult economy. That said, the government recently spent $5 million to upgrade the Comfort’s pier in Baltimore, allowing it to lay berth there for another 20 years. I will continue to do everything I can to make that happen.”
What will the loss of the USNS Comfort mean to Maryland? Tell us in the comments sections below

Good Bye Comfort . Dutch has NO pull in Congress ,What is he going to threaten to vote against an Obama budget ? Dutch is a prime example for the NEED of term limits ,he was once a good congressman now he is like lint in the pocket of the administration ,it's worthless but you know it's there.

I agree Buzz it only makes sense it just disgusts me that Dutch will go around using this as a reason to keep him in office ,WHY ?Can't he be honest and tell people were in trouble and pork spending must be reigned in? Wouldn't it be refreshing just once to hear honesty ?Why get peoples expectations up and waste time ?

Kevin, that pork spending keeps these politicians in power. The country is quickly approaching the point where almost half rely on government entitlements. The politicians realize that those voters won't bite the hand that feeds them.
After WW II Winston Churchill knew England was broke and tried to prepare the people for the rough road ahead. Churchill led the conservative party. He lost to Clement Attlee the leader of the labor party.
If politicians told the truth this nation would not be $15 trillion in debt and Europe would not be on the brink of finical collapse.
When the defense budget is slashed Maryland will suffer as we depend on the large number of federal employees who live here.

Ruppersberger should be asking Obama and Clinton why they're signing over the Bering Islands of Alaska back over to the Russians.Ruppersberger is useless.
