Search Warrants Served at North Point Flea Market

Baltimore County police served warrants Saturday on 16 vendors suspected of selling counterfeit goods at the Dundalk market.

Baltimore County police officers have just finished serving a series of search warrants on about 16 dealers suspected of selling counterfeit goods at the North Point Flea Market in Dundalk.

Using funds from the Federal Bureau of Justice Assistance Intellectual Property Theft Enforcement Program, officers initiated an investigation after complaints were received about the fake goods, according to Cpl. Cathy Batton, a spokesman for the Baltimore County Police Department.

Detectives worked with representatives from the Recording Industry Association of America, the Motion Picture Association of America, Stumar Investigations and Walters Investigative Services (trademark representatives for many major brand names for several months to gather evidence, according to a statement issued by Batton.

Police allege that vendors have sold counterfeit Nike, Apple, North Face, Polo, Ugg, True Religion and Timberland goods at the flea market in the 2400 block of Old North Point Road.

Detectives also bought counterfeit movies and music recordings from various stands, Batton said.

Detectives shut down the market Saturday morning while the warrants were being served to ensure all vendors remained on the scene and that no evidence could be removed before seizure, according to Batton.

The seized merchandise will be evaluated by trademark experts and charges are pending against vendors found to be selling counterfeit goods.

The investigation is ongoing, according to Batton.

The sad part is this may be one of the only ways to make a living for these individuals They can't get a job at the steel mill any longer. Cars over $20K, housing more than one could make on miminum wage, and not to mention insurance, registration, taxes, utilities, food, fees, etc.

We should all feel a little safer because of this fine police work...wonder how many legitimate operators lost business because of the intrusion..

The knock off stuff is sold cheap...consumers know what they're buying... why not place this kind of effort, focus and tax dollar use on going after the real..dangerous criminals...petty enforcement at best..

I agree (read above). The gov allows the chinese to copy everything and does nothing about that. Only our own citizens are badgered.

Answer: a person who has a tin badge issued by the government. The same government that outsourced all our jobs with the loony free trade agreements. When the enemy takes over the gov this is what it looks like.

Buck, just thinking out loud but I wonder if some of the legitimate operators at the North Point Flea Market may have contacted the Police to complain about all of the counterfeit items being sold that have hurt their business. I realize that this isn't the crime of the century but if someone makes a complaint the Police will investigate no matter how small. I'm sure the officers would rather be investigating something a little more exciting then this though--ha! Sort of reminds me years ago when the vice squad raided a bunch of old men (in their 70 & 80's) for gambling violations playing poker.

No one is legitimate any more including you. Just try to fly at the airport and see how you are treated by the gov.

It is a flea market - you know what you are getting. Another misguided operation from the BC police. On the other hand, I am sure Dunkin Donuts was sold out this morning.

Feel so much safer now.

I wonder if anyone else sees the wasted Government spending. REALLY they sell fake stuff cheap at the Flea Market. It took federal money and under cover cops months to figure this out? Just ask anyone where they got those purple Uggs.

Do your homework. Seems like a "nothing" crime, but the majority of the profits made from these counterfeit good supports terrorism and other organized crime.

At street level, the bags openly displayed at Namdaemoon are clearly fakes, even to a person who knows little about luxury goods, and the prices are low. A fake Hermès bag costs about $45, much less than the price tag of as much as several thousand dollars for the genuine article. But the British tourist in New York just shrugged her shoulders when asked where she thought the $60 she had just spent on a fake Gucci bag had gone. "In their pockets, I guess," she said, referring to the owner of the store.

"The real thing is so overpriced," she added. "Why spend thousands of dollars when you can get one for much, much less."
Our government is selling deadly weapons and aircraft to many of the same countries....They need to re focus and lead by example...this type of waste is the reason for many problems, even at this local level...If it gets through customs...the market will always be there...hurting no one any more than the government does...think about it..

Our own gov sends money to the same organizations. Al-Queda was directly supported by our gov in Libya and Egypt and now Syria. Go figure. If we do it it's wrong but if they do it its illegal?? Problem is we need to get back to reality all the way around. I see the raid as one set of thugs on another set of thugs.

What they were doing was illegal. No different than running a red light, scalping tickets, robbery, drug dealing or murder. Though you may think it's petty the police got a tip, acted on it and prevailed. Good job BCoPD.

And what the gov is doing is illegal too. Strip searches at the airport and sporting events when there are other means to the same end. Killing people with drones who happen to be in the wrong place an the wrong time. Our gov needs to adjust and get back to what made this country great. Invading other countries isn't legal but our gov does it. So what if a guy is making a living selling counterfeit. At least we get a deal there at the flea market. AT the walmart the same stuff costs much more. Red lights my eye. No one was commiting rape, robbery drug dealing etc. I suppose you'd rather see them do that instead!!!

Doesn't walmart sell the same danged stuff in their stores??? Oh, I forgot the gov doesn't get their cut at the flea market like they do at the walmart. Sorry. I didn't realize the true nature of this "crime".

To the complainers of the County Police next time you need them for some petty crime like illegal parking, graffiti on your fence, noise complaint, someone smashing out your car window ect.... remember what you said the police should not deal with such petty crimes they have better things to do.

Reread, Freddy. It wasn't the county police. It was the same arm of the gov that sold illegal guns to Mexican drug lords to try and end the 2nd amendment. Wake up. This isn't the same group running the gov that was there during WWII. Maybe if they did deal with the issues that concern you so much there wouldn't be so much "parking, graffiti, noise, window smashing". The only reason they busted these guys is because they didn't make the same deal as Walmart did before selling the stuff. In other words they didn't get their cut.

Freddy - cops laugh at that stuff anyway. Complain too much and they will lock you up instead.
Sorry, nobody is getting hurt in this. Nobody is having their property destroyed.

It's a trademark violation. It's like identity theft in a round about way.

It was the county police along with federal agents that was involved. Plus I know some of the officers involved.

Who gets robbed? All the people who work hard to produce the originals - it is their hard work, artistic talents and well made productions being poorly copied and used for free by counterfeiters.

"..What are the qualifications of a "trademark expert" ?.." Most people who have been shown the difference between a genuine product and a faked version quickly see the difference. Trademark experts are trained and tested and passed the test. And most of us could easily be trained to spot counterfeit goods.

People pay less for counterfeit goods, but do they get their money's worth? If you feel that the originals are overpriced, don't buy them. People buy knockoffs because some people think that counterfeit goods are as fashionable and well made as originals, but they are wrong. People who do sport original goods can often spot a fake across a crowded room.

If you know for certain that Walmart, or anyone else, is selling counterfeit goods, than report it and possibly receive a cash reward - from the corporation who's goods were copied or the government. Or just do it to be a good citizen. REPORT IT TO THE RIPPED-OFF MANUFACTURER!

Governments do a lot - on a HUGE scale - that I am opposed to, too. But I'm against waiting to stop counterfeiters until after all of our country's most major problems are ended.

Counterfeiting is a major problem to the talented, dedicated people who work hard to create and produce quality goods that get knocked off as cheap stuff.

I believe calling these products "counterfeit products" very insulting and racist. Let's please use the term "undocumented products."
Speaking of undocumented issues, I wonder how many illegal aliens these fearless lawmen have they passed right by on their way to Dunkin Donuts or 7-11? I know many complaints have been made of those pandering at Home Depot. I wonder why they are never arrested?

Illegal is Illegal!!! It does not matter how small it is. What right does a vender have selling products that was not made by the original designer? The designer went through the process of creating the product from start to finish. How is it right to reproduce their product and/or sell them with out their consent? Just because you like them does not mean you deserve a deep discount. In addition, there are also other brand names that produce nearly the same product under a legal different name and price drop. Also..It says on the movies that the product should not be reproduced or they could face criminal charges..WRONG is wrong. I feel sorry for the vendors at the NPFM who are legit. It is not a grey line...It is clear..It is wrong and illegal.

So is exceeding the speed limit...when there are so many dangerous criminals doing very bad things in most neighborhoods the resources taken to enforce these perceived illegal activities are wasted for the most part, very expensive to prosecute, and in the end no one is any safer...additionally, this type of exercise by the cops is really no more than a very expensive pacifier...it won't curb or even stop the perceived problem...like trying to get everyone to drive the speed limit...get real..

Everyone who goes there knows what they are buying. Was it wrong, yes. But to have so much time energy n money wasted on that is stupid. Write them a ticket n let them know your gonna be back, if they continue to do it then arrest them.
