Work on a retired Navy ship being dismantled at the Sparrows Point Shipyard was temporarily suspended Saturday when a fire broke out on board.

Firefighters responded to the shipyard at 11:55 a.m. Nov. 10, for a call about the fire on board the USNS Range Sentinel, according to public safety spokeswoman Cpl. Cathy Batton.

Workers were evacuated from the ship by 12:16 p.m. and the fire, which occurred in the walls of the vessel, was brought under control at 12:47 p.m., Batton said Tuesday.

The fire, which was ruled accidental, was fought by the personnel of 22 units that responded to the scene, according to Batton.

There were no injuries.

The Sentinel is being dismantled at the shipyard as a result of the company winning a naval contract for the dismantling and recycling of the retired World War II-era vessel.
