Teen Charged after Video of Attack at Rosedale McDonald's Goes Viral
One employee and a patron try to stop beating.
(UPDATED 12:01 a.m.) A 14-year-old girl faces assault charges and an 18-year-old girl has charges pending against her after a violent attack at a Rosedale McDonald's.
The beating of the unidentified 22-year-old victim was videotaped and has gone viral on the Internet.
The attack occurred at about 8 p.m. on April 18 at the McDonald's in the 6300 block of Kenwood Avenue. When officers arrived, they discovered a 22-year-old female who appeared to be having a seizure, according to a statement released by the Baltimore County Police Department.
Witnesses advised that two female suspects had assaulted the victim. Both suspects were later identified. A 14 year-old female has been charged as a juvenile. Charges are pending against an 18-year-old female. The victim was transported to Franklin Square Hospital for treatment.
No additional information about the victim's condition is available at this time. The incident remains under investigation and the State's Attorney's Office is reviewing the case to determine whether it was racially and/or gender motivated and Baltimore County Police refused to comment further.
Adding another twist to the incident, multiple media outlets report that Equality Maryland has identified the victim as a transgendered woman. That organization wants the attack investigated as a hate crime.
A three-minute video of the attack begins with two women kicking the beating the victim near a bathroom as she is lying on the ground. One employee tries to stop the attack, but the attack continues, even after an older woman tries to break up the attack. That woman was shoved for her efforts.
The two suspects then rip a wig off of the victim and drag her to the front door. One of the suspects can then been seen landing a devastating blow to the victim’s head as she lay on the floor. The victim then appears to go into a seizure.
The video of the beating garnered hundreds of thousands of views on various websites, including The Smoking Gun and The Drudge Report. The video was apparently originally posted on YouTube, but taken down by administrators for violating the site’s policies.
The video is so graphic that it required McDonald’s to release a statement regarding the incident on its corporate website.
"We are shocked by the video from a Baltimore franchised restaurant showing an assault. This incident is unacceptable, disturbing and troubling," the company said in a statement posted on its website. "Nothing is more important than the safety of our customers and employees in our restaurants. We are working with the franchisee and the local authorities to investigate this matter."

Why is the violence on this woman being perpetuated here by posting the video? It is not justified as an "illustration" to the article, it is unnecessary.
The person who recorded the video should be charged as an accomplice to the crime.

They are animals, young animals raised clearly by animals and I hope they are cadged for the rest of their lives. The 14 year old! Where the HELL are her parents? My 14 year old child would not be out with an 18 year old at Mcdonalds. Hell, she would not be out with out me or at a friends house. But that is what you get. We want to blame schools and teachers and anyone else, but you want to know what is wrong with this country, it the PARENTS of these "children" who probably would act just as bad because they are animals themselves.

Attack is bad enough, very disturbing that there were young men standing around watching and filming - not lifting a finger to protect the young woman.

The unfortunate reality of today is our society has degraded to the point where everyone just looks out for themselves. It's difficult to debate due to the obvious direction this ends up pointing towards - however I can say that the greatest factor involved is absentee/bad parenting. This is an issue that is not race specific.

Al & Jesse would both be heading here if it was the other way around. Nothing will be done about this , the animals will get a slap on the wrist and they'll just go and it again. They know they can get away with this kind of BS. Most of the people working there should be fired, but they won't be. Shame on the justice system in this country.

I agree with u 100%. The 14 yr old should be charged as an adult n to the fullest. I saw 3 girls kicking her though. The workers should be fired. There is no way u can tell me that the man, the person filming n the one laughing could not stop this. I am ashamed of our justice system. That poor woman, a head beating like that can do so much damage.

the sad thing to this is that our children these days has NO RESPECT for the human race, they act like animals as said in the other comments and yes it is so true that if the shoe was on the other foot they would list this as a hate crime, also the problem we face everyday with our children is that we can not discipline our children like we were discipline when i was growning up, as they say a good old fashion butt whipping wouldn't do them no harm, and then maybe they would RESPECT others and realize what life has to offer them, and on the other hand i hope these two animals get their time in jail, and hopefully someone in there should do to them what they did to this other girl, lock them up and throw away the keys....

Mr. Smith, and Dutch thanks for the "move to opportunity!"
I have been predicting this for the last two years. Baltimore County is becoming an extension of the city.

On the other hand this is what the voters of the county voted for over the years. This type of cancer doesn't grow over night.

This is just horrible. I agree with Ron. How can so-called young men stand around and let something like this happen. How can anyone? All I saw was what appeared to be an elderly woman put herself in danger to try and help that girl. Sad - it is just so sad what is happening to our society. No regard for humankind.

It is disgraceful to see young women beating that woman like that. I can not believe the manager or staff did nothing to stop that display of senseless violence. They were able to literally drag that poor girl out of the restaurant and only a elderly customer had the guts to intervene. It makes my heart sad to think young women are just as violent and heartless as convicted criminals. And to think what ever provoke this altercation will boil down to some he say she say bullshxx, and will probably be over a lazy man. Now they will go to jail and ruin their futures over something petty.

it was like watching a psycological thriller for real. Wondering why nobody took action against this, why they did not lock the doors to keep the perpetraters inside, and keep them there while they called the cops. But of course they didn't. Why they didn't is beyond my intelligence, but i can tell you after seeing this video, it makes me not want to go to this mcdonalds any more then i already haven't been. The whole place digusts me. Managers and employees. No respect for anybody. They get paid to treat customers like their trash, and serve their food like dog food for real. It used to be convenient to go here, because it's right up the street from where i live if you wanted something quick on the run. Not anymore. I get more satifaction going to burger king in rosedale. Some one please answer this... My sister is reading online that the girl getting beat up was not a girl at all but a transgender male. Is this true? not that it makes any difference in the beating.
Kathleen
11:49 pm on Friday, April 22, 2011
You are absolutely right: it makes no difference. No one should be allowed to be beaten by two other people for 3+ minutes without anyone intervening except one elderly woman. If they were beating her for being a trans woman, it just makes their actions more despicable. I hope it's true so that the animals involved can be prosecuted for hate crimes based on both race and gender discrimination as well as assault and battery.
I also hope that both the victim and the elderly woman who got shoved in the incident sue the pants off both the franchise where it happened and McDonald's corporation. The behavior of the staff during this incident is absolutely deplorable. No matter what corporate policy dictates, the employees could have at least locked the doors or otherwise prevented the criminals from re-entering the restaurant after they left the first time. How hard would that have been??? Instead they allowed them to return and that's when the blow to the head occurred that caused the poor woman to have a seizure. I sincerely hope that the lawyers are lining up outside her hospital room.
What is happening to our country??? How could anyone stand by and allow this to happen? I'm sick at heart over this whole incident and I hope the victim gets the justice that she deserves and that no one allows prejudice to dampen the outrage they feel over what happened that night to a fellow human being.

I live right down the street from this mcdonalds. I can tell you now, that the employees and the managers there are lazy! They have bad customer service and bad food service as well. Half the time i go up there, nobody is in the drive thru line, nor in the store and you still have to wait for them to take your order in the drive thru and when you get your food, the nuggets are hard and the food is far from hot. Just goes to show you how much they care about the customers and what their company can provide. The employees treat their job there as if it was a high school recess all day.
They stood back from the fight just like they would in a high school hall. What kind of employee or even manager would not even call the cops on this. Customer service should be of the utmost importance. The chain is already going bad. so many bad reputations of this mcdonalds it's unbelieveable. They should shut this mcdonalds down for real. I've had 95% of bad experiences here. And this video just proves my point on how careless their employees are, and you even saw how much effort the manager put in to calling the cops on this. All should be fired!!!!!!!!! WITH ME WORKING NEARLY 12 YEARS IN FAST FOOD CHAINS, I'VE NEVER SEEN ANYTHING OF THIS OBSURDNESS! I WOULDN'T BE SURPRISED IF CUSTOMERS STOPPED COMING TO THIS MCDONALDS. Some of the comments are very interesting. Obviously sexual orientation trumps race. I wonder if the video would be received with such outrage if the women were beating a black transgender woman in, say, Park Heights? The crime is outrageous no matter what color the assailants are. The only good luck the victim had in this incident was the assult took place in Baltmore County and not Baltimore City. A county judge or jury will probably convict them. A city judge or jury would probably have seen the criminals as the true victims here.

My goodness; the accusations: “racist”, paraphrasing - sexual orienientationism or transgenerdism (not words, but I imagine they should be), “poor white woman”, “animals”, blaming or calling out specific politicians or community leaders and more…
I believe most of us are shocked at what is happening in our, what used to be, wonderful communities. There is no mistaken that our communities are suffering along with the entire world which seems to be going to ‘hell in a hand basket’.
I understand that the ranting, frustration, disgust and aggravation in not knowing what to do about many things because sadly our ‘laws’ don’t seem to be able to simply distinguish the basic duty of telling what is right from wrong.
Again paraphrasing - I also agree with whomever said that being politically correct has far outreached it’s limitations in doing what is right.

Take away the race factor, sexual orientation or location and what’s left? A crime – a crime of hate - people with no self respect or conscious of what they did to another human being. And, maybe in today’s society - people who are revered on Youtube and other sites (sites that encourage this horrible behavior) for their 15 minutes of fame.
Did the person being beat over the use of a bathroom really warrant such an outcome?
Look into yourselves for the answers to most of these questions. Replace the victims and perpetrators with people you know and people within your own family. Can you, as a viable person of our society, even imagine someone you know acting like this? Better yet – would YOU act like this?

What kind of people are running this McDonald's? To stand around or walk past while someone is being beaten is one of the most awful things I have ever seen. This McDonald's should be boycotted and shut down. Pretty much any McDonald's that you go into should be shut down. Like the one on Wise Ave. Tell the manager that the person helping you should pull their pants up because your Granddaughter shouldn't be seeing his underwear and they will stand there and look at you like you are crazy. The one thing I don't understand, rather than try and comprehend the nature of the issue and feelings on both sides, you inflame the topic. That does nothing to help your cause and yet you can't see this.
How many times on this site have you gotten into arguments with people?
One of the real problems with immigration is the lack of assimilation, yet you can't see that. You set yourself up for the conflict not realizing you are becoming the object of what you see regarding the comments related to the McDonalds incident.
If people are going to take you seriously, then you have to learn how to respect their viewpoints.

I have asked you repeatably about your community service background and no response. There is no record of Robert Armstrong on the web that would indicate all of you expertise and achievements. Those angry old white people you speak of pay the bills of this country including yours. Based on your own comments, many of them degrading, I would say that you are a very young immature person, who may also be an illegal.
You are afraid because you lack the courage to stand behind your own convictions. It takes courage to stand up and be counted. That is the sad part. It is very easy to spew a variety of immature and childish rants while standing in the shadows.
That is where you loose all of your creditability. One day when you grow up and become a man maybe your words will have some actual meaning.

I was almost physically ill watching this video. For me, it's not about transgender, or a black & white issue, I simply watched a brutal assault between a defenseless victim and 2 savage animals. With all the males in that resturaunt, the only person who came to the victim's defense was an elderly woman, who got pushed & punched by the same perpetrators for trying to help. EVERY employee in McDonalds that night should be fired for not intervening and stopping this assault. Even the manager, who is seen causally walking away as the victim is seizing on the floor, held open the door and allowed the perpetrators to leave the building, rather than hold them inside until police came. I, for one, will never patronize McDonalds again. I hope those 2 girls are convicted and the victim ends up owning that store one day.

What is all this talk about the "males" in the restaurant that did nothing? Since when do men have to step into the middle of a vicious beating? Kids today, even women, are known to carry knives and guns. Try stepping into the middle of that kind of beating and the next you know is you are the one being attacked. No, the smartest thing any "male" could have done was to call the cops.

Sean, what you say is true, but you and I both know, as men and not boys that we would have to face our selves every day when we shave.
There are a number of things that could have been done as oppose to laughing and alerting them to vamoose because the cops are coming.
They could have shouted the cops are here or around the corner, they could have told the perps the incident was being filmed and they would have been identified among other things.
As for me, I would have done something. I guess that's one of the reasons why I have a weight lifter most of my life. Walking away from something like that would haunt me and everything I stand for.
I mean if that old lady had the guts to get involved it doesn't say much for chivalry these days. She is the real sid-bar story in this incident. Someone from Patch should be on this.
By the way I gave some of your reporters a good tip and nothing. The tip was on one of the most controversial stories Patch has covered. There is so much going on out there and it goes right over the heads of most reporters.

Sean: I agree.
Buzz: I feel what you are saying. I am a reasonably fit male approaching 40 myself, I work out at the Perry Hall Y 3-4 times a week. I aspire to look as fit as you at your age (I checked out your campaign site).
That said - I vaciliate back and forth on what I would do in that situation. 50% of me thinks I'd have not intervened (given the atmosphere) directly, but I'd have made sure I called 911. Although that 50% would have likely been overriden because around 2:30 in that video I'd have stepped in. They were trying to drag her out to the parking lot it seemed and I am confident at that point I'd have said enough was enough.
The problem is simple. I have a wife and kid. Where do my priorities really lie? Is it to save another person, or is it to make sure I arrive home safe and sound for my wife and child? When I was younger, there's no doubt I'd have jumped in. I was robbed once, when I lived in SW DC by someone who was alone and had a knife to my back. At the time, I was well versed in martial arts and instead of panicking at the thought of getting knived, I was honetly calm, and was considering 'taking him out'. However, once I realized doing so - in front of my apartment complex - would likely just end up getting me shot at some point thereafter (they DID know where I live, so to speak) I simply gave up the wallet.

The Fireman and Police analogy is flawed. Both are trained professionals in what they do. TRAINED. Are they heroes? Absolutely! They take risks every dangerous situation they go into. People that date/marry/pro-create with them understand these risks going in.
if your viewpoint is to risk dying to save someone you don't know, then God bless you, but some of us put the lives of some people (family) above others.
The fact that it was a WOMAN who jumped in to assist was safer for her because if a man jumps in, it upsets the gender balance of the conflict. Or maybe I'm offbase on this, just a thought.
For me, it would have definitely depended on the severity of the beating. First, I'd have called 911 while it began. Once that call was completed, I'd have assessed the scenario as most beatings in places like this don't get as far/severe as this one. I'd have likely jumped in at the end there though.
I guess for me, there's a point in time injury wise where I HAVE to jump in. Right about the time she started having the seizure - that would have been the time for me, I believe. At that point, she could no longer actively defend herself.

sean... you can't be serious. Making excuses for why none of the men stepped in to help someone getting their head kicked in. what happened to "doing the right thing" I am a woman and I grew up in Rosedale (it once was a very nice community when I lived there) and I wouldn't hesitate to step in and help that person. them having a weapon wouldn't cross my mind. My concern would be to stop the violence because it's the right thing to do. how would you feel if your mother, or your wife, or your daughter was laying on the floor in that situation and died because people were afraid to get involved. Firemen risk their lives everyday, they don't go into burning buildings because they worry about getting burned. They are heroes. And so is the women who stood up with courage to do what was right. the right thing is simple..... help someone in need. Think about it, i would rather die helping someone then live with myself knowing i just stood there and watched this deplorable behavior and hatred. are all the good men gone? i hope not

Jackie, well spoken. I think you just summed up what most of us would have done.
You also said that Rosedale was once a nice community. I lived there for 25 years and every time I go back I take a step down the stairs to a caravan of uncertainty.
You can thank Dutch, Jim Smith and the current monarch Kevin Kamenetz. It all started years ago when Dutch open the county up to the "move to opportunity" agenda.
Kamenetz has been around far too long to plead ignorance to this issue. Talk to a retired cop you might know and ask them. You would not believe what is going on in this county.
Kamenetz looked me right in the eye at a forum one night and said and this is a quote, "no illegals."
So much for quotes from politicians.
It will be very interesting to see what type of justice will be dispensed in this case. In the end the dreaded PC-ness will get in the way.

Tim, its a tough call. It is allays, as they say, easier said then done.
I will say this, we all remember Columbine shooting. In the aftermath of that incident, law enforcement had to rethink its approach to those types of incidents.
Our first in-service training class they threw the old book out and basically taught us when engaging an active shooting situation, to get your but inside as quickly as possible regardless of backup. Every second you waste could result in additional lives lost. Engage the shooter (s).
The difference here is what is the responsible thing for civilians to do. We have to remember they are not trained as cops and sure aren't paid to endanger themselves.
Each one of us would have to evaluate and react even if that reaction meant doing nothing.
Patch should go out and find that woman who intervened. That took guts and a conviction of what all of us should be thinking about.
There were enough men there to do something besides laugh and act like thugs. Its the culture that worries me.

Totally agree, no one is paying attention to this lady - and they should be.

oh and in other news, apparently the 18 year old was ivolved in a similar altercation a year ago. Same McDonald's. This time, a 38 year old woman who went there with her two daughters.

Unbelievable. Yay to our court system. This person should've been locked up the first time.
I guess the woman attacked was fearful for her or her daughters well being, so never followed through with the charges. Sad, very sad.

i think all the employees working that day should be held accountable. it took a 55 year old woman to stop this horrific crime. shame on our society.

I am 16 year old Gay myself, this brought me to tears and I don't cry that often. I know what it is like to be bullied because of being different (I live in New Zealand so it is not just the US in which this happens). The girls in this video should either get a mental-test or be put in a mental hospital where they can get some help for their obvious problems rather than sitting in a concrete cell or a barb-wired court-yard where they can hang out and socialize with their "Homie's and G-Dogs" where they will not get any help for the problems they have . There is a very big difference between being homophobic in your head/verbally and nearly killing someone to the point of them having a seizure. Both of which should not be accepted but yet we have to start somewhere.
