Hundreds of Thousands Without Power Following Friday Storm
BGE says recovery could take days.
(Updated: 9:38 a.m.)—Bill Bickel was getting his family ready for the sun, wind and water at the beaches of North Carolina.
Instead, the wind and water came to him before the family could leave their Bellona Avenue home Saturday morning. A tree branch fell from their yard, ripping apart a power pole and yanking the power line from their home.
"I think there was a little bit of an explosion" shortly after midnight, Bickel said. "I was thankful it didn't hit the house, to be honest with you."
Bickel was out on his driveway surveying the damage with his 2-1/2 year old son Zachary, who was dressed and ready for a vacation.
"As you can see, with the kids in their beach shorts, they're ready to go," he said.
Bickel called 911 last night—couldn't get through—and called Baltimore Gas and Electric—no response yet. And he's not the only one waiting.
Road and electric crews are trying to recover from Friday night's powerful thunderstorms in the Baltimore area, an effort that could take days.
According to Baltimore Gas and Electric, over 500,000 customers lost power during the storm, and as of 8:15 a.m., more than 421,000 were still without power. Over 100,000 outages were reported in Baltimore County.
For comparison, 750,000 BGE customers lost power during Hurricane Irene in August 2011. Officials are warning that restoration could take a while for many customers. The utility prioritizes "critical infrastructure" components like 911 centers and hospitals.
“Once these issues have been addressed and we’ve completed our initial damage assessment, field assignments will be prioritized in a way that restores service to the greatest number of customers at one time," said Jeannette Mills, BGE's chief customer officer, in a statement. "Consideration will also be given to customers who have been out of service the longest. That said, a large number of our customers should expect to be without power for several days.”
To report an outage to BGE, call 877-778-2222.
Kyrle Preis, assistant chief of the Baltimore County Fire Department, said there were no major injuries to report. The county's emergency operations center opened early Saturday morning, shortly after the storms passed.
Preis said there are reports across the county of damage caused by fallen trees and debris. Fifteen homes were struck by trees; three homes were declared unsafe.
"This is one of those things where we can look at Baltimore County and draw a circle" around affected areas, he said. "This is really, really widespread."
In southwest Baltimore County, Catonsville was hit harder than Arbutus, with lights out on Rolling Road at both Edmondson Avenue and Baltimore National Pike. University of Maryland, Baltimore County is also without power.
Power is on at a majority of businesses along Frederick Road, however.
Officers in Baltimore County Police Department's Wilkens precinct told Patch that there have been no major injuries reported as a result of Friday's storms.
For more updates on the storm in southwest Baltimore County, click here.
The priority for crews right now, Preis said, is downed electrical lines that may be sparking and trees blocking roadways.
"The call volume's actually going down but we still have some of our backroads and more rural areas that haven't been traversed yet," he said.
To report trees blocking county roadways, call 410-887-5210.
In addition to the power outages, the Baltimore area is set for another day of record heat. Preis advises residents to check on family and friends who may be at risk. Baltimore County does not operate cooling centers; instead, Preis advises that residents seek somewhere with air conditioning, such as a library, senior center or mall.
"Find a place to go," he said.
More severe weather to come
Forecasters say that more severe weather is on the way. Foot's Forecast says the next batch of storms not quite as intense as Friday night's system should hit central Maryland around 5 p.m. Saturday.
In the meantime, the Baltimore area is still under a heat advisory from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., with highs expected to reach 100 degrees and a heat index as high as 110

We are in Charles Village and while it was a violent storm, there does not appear to be significant damage. The only thing that was a little funny was a box spring floating down the middle of East 27th Street in the middle of the storm, but some kindly passerbys were nice enough to move it to the sidewalks to allow cars to move freely down the street. Minor tree damage and a lot of noice and scary lightning, but no power shortage on this block.

I live in Towson near the Mall. My windows were closed but not latched. When I stepped on a big wet spot on the carpet I blamed the poor dog. Then I realized the poor little critter couldn't have created the pool of water in the middle of my living room. I didn't see the rain blow in because we were huddled in the closet worried the wind would blow in the windows or we might have a tornado. I'll be cleaning up mounds of dirt on my balcony from the heavy ceramic planters that broke. Thank God I have electricity in this heat. I'm not complaining about anything.....thinking of those poor people in Colorado.

I don't think it's a matter of complaining. It's the total lack of publicity regarding the water outage that's kind of frustrating. Nothing on the Sun. Nothing on the radio (that I've been able to find). Nothing on any of the public works sites. Nothing.
Just some sort of official word on how big a deal it is and how long they expect it to be before the water is restored would go a long way towards handling the stress of the situation.
We're not expecting miracles. Just open lines of communication.

I am also not sure why a neighborhood of such concentration as Loch Raven Village would see an outage where one section of street is on, everything else is out. Towson Mareketplace has lost two days of revenue - which if they where small business would put them under. There is a heavy concentration of outages in this area with no explanation - even though I suspect some sort of software problem - not hardware - as I have driven through the Village and there are no downed wires anywhere. We are not complaining, but we have been out since 11:30 Friday and Loch Raven Blvd is a mess traffic wise. We just want answers.

I was stuck in a car with two other people in Rosedale from the beginning to the end of the storm. Plastic bags were flying through the air, trees were swaying like they were made of rubber. Who's going to be ready when "poop" hits the fan? I know I am.

Having taken a big chance trying to go get cat food because the supply was dwindling way too fast for the heat, I want to compliment: the restraint of so many drivers on Joppa Rd, Target for being open for some supplies, and the kind people who actually allowed a dispersing funeral party exit from Moreland Cemetery. Kevin, I'd appreciate what you do more if you weren't online responding to these comments during a time when many people are suffering in the heat without electricity. No one should doubt people are "breaking there butts" but it's BGE that is unprepared. Every outage nowadays is a "multi-day" event. They need to expect frustration from their customers.

5:51 pm on Saturday, June 30, 2012
Stephanie,
This was an un-predicted storm that originated in Iowa, NOT like the Noreasters we get in the winter or a tropical storm/hurricane late Summer/early Fall. BGE did not have time to call in backup from other states beforehand. Also, ever heard of a taking a break or riding from one outage to another and sending a "Thank-You" text?
Thanks for working the weekend BGE.

Brad, I'm certain BGE employees are working as hard as humanly possible. But let's not begin viewing them as saints/heroes. They are doing a job. I will send thank you texts to them as soon as I begin sending thank you's to cashiers, crossing guards, and bank tellers. Despite the unpredictability of this storm (they are all unpredictable now) the same neighborhoods are getting hammered over and over. Again, BGE has to expect frustration from it's customers.

So was there a tornado? It seems that every time there is a major weather event, our grids seem to shut down. Now I know what I'm saying here, it's a major weather event, you need to expect outages! But it seems to be every time? Are we not paying enough to get better more redundant systems online? Why is one pumping station supplying so many areas? Are there any 'lessons learned' meetings that take place after events like this? Yes we need to react when things go south, but what about planning since we know weather events are only going to get worse?

Give them a break. When a crisis isn't going on they are making sure your electricity is going through ok, laying new lines, taking care of street lights that have a problem, etc....... Do you really think they sit around and do nothing between storms? The people working in the call centers look forward to the kind customers who ask their questions and are done, most of the callers are yelling and screaming about something.

Let's move this along people. My 4 year old niece is sweating buckets because of this heat and no electricity. Now her mother and father are trying to find a hotel (by the way nearly all hotels are occupied because of this!) if you restore one part of the neighborhood restore all of it. There's no reason why a few block away has power and we don't. Maybe if the city spent a little bit more money in putting everyone's power underground we would all be lit up like the fourth of July like downtown baltimore is right now! My friend lives on Pratt & High street and woke up to perfect water and power. As if nothing happened... But my niece is sweating buckets.....oh. Ok.

I whole heartedly agree. I have been without power this whole time. Last night was the worse because of the heat. I am considering staying at a hotel with my children tonight but really can't afford it.
The area of Towson, Loch Hill and Sherwood has one of the largest concentration of outages yet still no BGE. I understand about hospitals and the 911 centers but agree BGE IS NEVER FULLY PREPARED FOR ANY STORM! Yet they continue to raise rates.
When the cable goes out or my phone is out I get a pro-rated bill. How about apply the same to BGE. Only when there bottom line is impacted will we see better service restoration times.

Manor Care Ruxton is around the corner from me. I have friends in Ruxton who are also without power. We're just lucky that our power didn't go out.

Most of Dundalk doesn't have power yet. When driving around yesturday we only saw one BGE truck fixing street lights. Thats right! I'm not talking traffic lights either. Meantime our elderly and pets are having heat strokes and our food is going bad. I guess BGE is getting even for all the credits they had to issue to their customers.

Bart think about it. Generators run on what? Gas or diesel or solar power? ManorCare has backup power but no generators can supply the entire amount of power required in this type of situation.
http://ecmweb.com/cee-news-archive/emergency-critical-condition-hospital-power
Study hurricane Katrina and the effects of power outages, flooding and governments response, or lack thereof. With the heat over the next several days lives could be lost. The governor is scheduled to be on "Face the Nation," this morning. I thought there was a state of emergency. How do take care of an emergency from a national broadcast studio.
Other Tim

Most large generators run on natural gas. Still plenty of that around, and not disrupted by power outages. They also come in all sizes, even big enough to power a hospital.

Seriously people? You guys are a microcosm of why this country is screwed up. What an embarassment.
To all those out of power still, I'm hoping you guys get it back today. Best wishes to you guys finding respite from the heat. All of us aren't well equipped for it as people like April has mentioned.
Something else to consider - if you see trees on/near your powerlines (overhang) report it to BGE. I drive down Silver Spring every day and I'm amazed that people let the trees hang over their lines.
Jeanne

Thank you Tim, some people what to go ahead and cut the branches themselves our complain about how they look after the trimming. You are so right to report the branches to BG&E so they can be safely taken down. After BG&E is done trim the other side of the tree that is on your property to even the branches out.

Buzz, again, you're making no sense. It shows a lack of preparation on the nursing home's part if they cannot run their facility, 100% in the case of an emergency such as this one. They are responsible for the lives of very fragile people.
And for you to make the cheap comment about O'Malley being on Face the Nation? So what? Do you expect him to be out there working on the lines?
We all certainly feel badly for those without power, but should everyone else put their lives on hold until everyone has their power back?
The way you attack people who dare to disagree with you or who dare to call you out on your ridiculous statements is beyond bad manners.

Patton stood in front of his troops not behind them. It's not the workers at BG&E who are at fault , it's the same issue that confronts us all - LEADERSHIP, both at the corporate and government level. We entrust our lives to these people and based on the last go around (if you read my links) you would know that this is not the first time BG&E failed to be prepared for this type of emergency.
After what you said about me a while back you have the gall to talk about manors. God forbid we disrupt Bart's life. Walk a mile in my shoes as the saying goes like the elderly sweltering in their homes without power while you sit at your computer tell me what I can and can't say with your AC running full blast. You want to rehash the despicable comment you made about me Bart so the people know what kind of man you really are.
As for Robert Armstrong and his bad mouthing MannorCare they shipped up a large generator from Florida and the AC is running again. The patients are getting AC from this additional large generator.
Bart if O'Malley is anything like you in regards to character God help us.
I know some retired BG&E workers who were force out. They bore the brunt of the work and the cost cutting at that level. I don't see the CEO's taking such cuts.

For those of you who do not understand you can be on a different grid from the people who live right across the street from you. They cannot put the power on if somewhere in your grid they have to remove trees or anything else before they can get to the wires. I am on Sollers Point Road, Dundalk--lights flickered, went out, back out and then on again. We only lost power for a few minutes. BGE trimmed trees all along Sollers Point Road a few months ago, and that probably saved us. My son and his family lost power on Yorkway and we took my generator to his house. He had his fridge hooked up to his neighbor's generator. When he got his running he hooked another neighbor up to his generator. That is how it is supposed to be. Neighbors and friends and family helping each other.

I am not sure why a neighborhood of such concentration as Loch Raven Village would see an outage as widespread as what we are experiencing. Towson Mareketplace has lost two days of revenue. There is a heavy concentration of outages in this area with no explanation, even though I suspect some sort of software problem - not hardware - as I have driven through the Village and there are no downed wires anywhere. We are We have been out since 11:30 Friday and Loch Raven Blvd is a mess traffic wise. If he wasn't alone and was with an adult, I going to asume his son was an adult I don't know, there would be no reason for you to check on him. If his son is a child it would have been nice for neighbors to check on each other, that includes all your neighbors. My husband is on the program to get warnings if bad storms are approaching because he has asthma with 50% use of his lungs so it can be bad and is dependent on electricity to use his nebulizer. We never got a call because this storm was a surprise when it came, thunderstorms were expected later the next afternoon. We have several emergency plans that we can pick from so my husband can go somewhere were there is electricity, we even have 2 plans for our dog so he doesn't have to sit in the heat. While I have received information from the County Executive's office that I have tried to pass along thrrough emails, I have not received any information from BGE this weekend. Well for all the people who are tired of the complaints I think you have to understand that there are some who can't afford to hang out at the mall; to stay in a hotel; to buy more food... If people need to vent about the bad thing, let them vent.
I know for a fact that BGE does not prioritize alone based on safety issues. If that was the case there would be traffic lights directing traffic instead of traffic comes. There are several major streets in Towson, Loch Hill, Putty Hill area that have no downed wires or poles. So at the very least why aren't the traffic lights on.
I found out today that in my area the power may not have went out but may have been turned off as some sort of rolling blackout to prevent further damage from the storm. If this is the case the. BGE NEEDS TO SAY SO! Do not tell me that there's a problem. Tell me the problem and how my area is impacted. Then and only then will this customer stop complaining.

You folks dont have basic food and water on hand to deal with something? Really?

I live in Roland Park and my power has been out since Friday night. But as I came through neighborhoods this morning, some places are a ghost town. Lights out, stores closed, tress down, trees through houses, water in their basements, damage to houses. I know people are frustrated, but BGE is trying to help everyone out. I heard this morning that there are over 150,000 trees down! It takes hours to cut down a tree because of the houses, power lines, people's safety. Not one neighborhood or person is more imortant than the other. If you are that pissed off that you don't have power, maybe you should have invested in a generator or been a little more prepared for any storm at any time. No wonder the world laughs at us in America. So many whiny, entitled victims that get really upset when they can't watch tv or sit in the air conditioning. What are the citizens in America going to do when real poop hits the fan?
I find it funny that all those people who always laugh at us "goofy" citizens as we prepare for the worst while fighting for more freedoms and less laws, less taxes and less government. They call us; wacko's or gun nuts or out of touch; but I am sitting pretty, 100% well off during this whole storm in Perry Hall.
Instead of spending $1500 on a big tv with my tax refund a few years ago... I bought a house generator. Instead of spending $4000 on a pool for the yard... I built a natural large fresh water pond (complete with edible fish, and plenty of water plants). Instead of repeatedly buying new vehicles to look rich and cool; I use that $400 a month car payment to buy 4 (50 G) filtered rain barrels, a huge yearly vegetable garden, a small greenhouse, and a solar sun room full of miniature banana trees, lemon/ lime trees, pineapple bushes, chilli plants and fresh herbs.

For anyone that has pets and can afford it: the Petsmart behind Harford Mall has a pet hotel, it cost $18.00 for day care and $22.00 for camp. Their number is (410)638-0330 (press 6 then 1) You can drop off your dog for the day, we usually drop off our dog for camp at 8:30am and pick him up at 7:30 pm, they will be in ac, be fed, walked inside the hotel area or if at camp playing all day except 12:00-1:00 that is rest time. The people there are great and love the animals and the break from the heat is good for the animals. They also take cats but I don't know the prices. I told a friend of mine that I know it's a lot of money, especially since you just lost all that food and have to replace it, but it is cheaper then a vet bill if you have to rush your pet in for heat stroke. Please keep in mind our pets have a fur coat so if we are hot they are even hotter. I do not work for Petsmart I just wanted to get the word out. Good luck everyone, stay cool.

First of all people without electricity are not "softies" , go several days without any electricity, that means no AC, cold food, lights, computer, TV, possibly no oven or stove, no microwave, etc..... They have lost food and now have to buy food, when they get there power back, and a lot of people don't have the money to buy twice the amount of food. Yes people have lived without AC but we could plug the fans in and use the electricity to run them to cool off, no electricity=no fans. The tempatures have been very hot, 2 code red days so far this week, and not helping. Having to buy meals, because you can't cook or don't have food to cook, is more expense. If the people going through all this want to vent, let them they deserve the chance. The only problem is the people who have to use cuss words and are nasty to specific people. Please don't blame BG&E, they are working their buts off and if they could go any faster they would. The storm created this problem and the government is not helping the counties. To everyone without electricity: I hope you get it back very soon.

Well, I'm probably going to get some flak from a few people on this, but let me explain something to you people back there in the Baltimore area. I live in the foothills of the Appalachian Mts in southeastern Ohio and we got hit pretty hard with that storm, as a matter of fact there are areas out here that are still without power and probably won't get it back until sometime next week. Now nobody out here is complaining about our power company getting the power back on, mainly because we know of the extent of the damage that this storm did out here and we know that our power company and their crews are doing the best they can to restore power to the whole state of Ohio parts of West Virginia and Indiana as safely as possible. There is one thing that we, out here in the mountains have learned to do and that's be prepared, we have generators, some houses are even powered was solar power and some houses even have rain barrels and ponds to collect the rainwater. We check on our neighbors even though our closest neighbor might be half mile down the road, we make it a point to know our neighbors and who needs what helped in times like this. Oh and by the way, I'm a native of Prince Georges County, Maryland and had BG&E for a power company in the city of Bowie for 20 yrs and we helped our neighbors there also. Even shared my generator with some of my neighbors when power went out.
