BLOG: Stream Restoration Challenge

The vital connection between our stream health, our ability to create jobs and our children’s future has never been more important or more threatened than it is right now.

That’s why, as part of our goal to restore the health of the Bay by 2025, we’re launching the Governor’s Stream Restoration Challenge. The challenge is a competitive grant program open to local governments and non-profit organizations to establish 1,000 acres of stream-side forests by 2015. It will also create opportunities for middle and high school students to engage in service-learning and environmental literacy activities.

Forest buffers filter nutrients, sediment and other pollutants from entering the stream. They protect the stream banks from erosion, slow the flow of water during storms and provide a healthy habitat for its inhabitants.

But why are our streams so important? It’s simple. Our streams ultimately determine the health of the Bay. The 10,000 miles of streams that run through our communities can deliver either clean water or pollutants to the Bay. It starts with the streams and ends in the Bay. But we have a choice of how it ends.

There is a story about a child who asks her grandfather: “Grandfather, we’ve learned all about the importance of trees, how they can help the environment, clean the air, and filter storm water run-off.  When’s the best time to plant a tree?”  Her grandfather says, “Well, it takes time for those roots to go deep and for branches to spread,… and so the most important time plant a tree is 20 years ago.”  And the little girl asks, “Well, when is the next best time to plant a tree?”  The grandfather responds:“Right now.”

Let’s get to work right now and take the Governor’s Stream Restoration Challenge.

After raising income taxes on middle class in a special session, this is a PR stunt. Feel good move. Tax and spend policies do not make me feel good. Tyranny at work.

Can Owe'Malley ever talk write or do anything without his ever present "children" involved? To exploit children this way to further his far left policies id disgusting.
I could just wrap my hands around his puny nec.......... oh never mind. I don;t want a visit form the MSP.

Your hate for me blinded you to what I wrote Frank. I used the word "children" in quotes directly from the story as in "our ability to create jobs and our children’s future"

Just as he uses every time he speaks. "It's for the children" has become a caricature. If its for the children then SMOKE & GAMBLE since some of those taxes go to the "children".

My comment had nothing to do with O'Malley's won children.

And I have no nasty ignorant comments about politicians bringing their children along and introducing them as most new candidates do. They all do it. They all should. It was those the left who said Palin "used her kids as props" intended as a slur. This is another example of how some people read into a comment all kinds of things that are not in it. Someone here mentioned it the other day. And I agreed with them. I believe they were talking about Steve doing it and now you are.

We the people to work for the government for free, Last time I checked they work for us! where the job creation? Looks like they don' t want U.S. to make a living. Very similar process in Germany years ago, Just that history seems to repeat the process and change the color of the lipstick on the pig.

No need to volunteer anymore, now that Maryland has forced community service hours on students before they can graduate. Let them plant the trees.

"forced community service hours"

That came to us thanks to the same lady in a story on The Patch a week or so ago and how she didn't let her children watch most television.

Doh its called control by anarcho-communism and occasionally as free communism or libertarian communism is anarchism which advocates the abolition of the state, markets, money, capitalism, and private property , direct democracy and a horizontal network of voluntary associations and workers' councils with production and consumption based on the guiding principle: "from each according to his ability, to each according to his need ...Business ideas and from Entrepreneurs yea you what until state, markets, money, decline Oh yea that in process, now working to eliminate capitalism, and private property. you will wait until you have no control of your private property you MUST BE BLIND oh one for u .
..Anyone who doesn't take truth seriously in small matters cannot be trusted in large ones either.
All that is valuable in human society depends upon the opportunity for development accorded the individual. ....Intellectuals solve problems, geniuses prevent them.
Albert Einstein.................Steve try again

Governor O'Malley, I have a question. Many years ago this state undertook an effort to restore the upstream fish population on the Patapsco. 3 local dams were modified with fish ladders to encourage upstream spawning. These 3 fish ladders were built for millions of taxpayers dollars. They actually operated for half of their lives then were neglected by the state/county whoever was responsible.

You were recently awarded millions of borrowed dollars to remove 3 local dams. Those 3 dams were the same ones as above. Stimulus dollars paid for the removal of the Rt 40 dam and the Blodes dam. Not sure about the Simpkin's dam. I guess since it is the smallest of the 3 it was with the Blodes funding.

What was accomplished for the millions invested in fish ladders? Why should we believe you that this is worth the "investment" in our "children"?

There are actually 4 dams. Union and Simkins are gone Daniels and Bloede are still there. The fish ladders cost $1.7 million and were funded by the Feds and private sources. Fish ladders didn't work but it's impossible to know if they work until after they are built.
What's wrong with having volunteers planting trees? (Besides turning them all into Commies and Nazis)

"The fish ladders cost $1.7 million and were funded by the Feds" Really Steve? Where do the "Feds" come up with that money?
One day people will finally realize that ALL funding for ALL things is a dollar that is taken form the private sector and not from the government.

How far off topic can you get? Go out and pick up trash when you see it and it will not end up in our streams or bay. As for MOM don't vote for him again if you think you are better.

Oh, thank you for bestowing on us this wonderful opportunity, King O'Malley! Your wisdom and benevolence knows no bounds! Please, may we also send our kids out on the highways to pick up trash? I'm sure you have more important uses for our tax dollars, such as providing discounted tuition to illegal aliens. We don't want them to have to plant trees now, do we!

Well yes, Frank, I do resent it when my tax dollars are wasted and my wonderful governor comes out with this touchy-feely blog about how we should volunteer to do the work our tax money should be paying for. Sheesh!

There is nothing wrong with restoring streams. It's a positive program.

No tax dollars are spent on the DREAM Act.

There not. Maybe you should go to the MD Legislature site and see for yourself. Anybody covered under the DREAM Act has to pay for their own tuition. The State isn't paying it.

Let's plant some trees along the exposed sewer lines that run adjacent to our streams - that'll fix it! Let's cut the enforcement arm of Maryland's TMDL strategies and plant trees instead! MOM is a joke and plays on the ignorance of his state.
