Lt. Governor Anthony Brown Honored at Hard Yacht Cafe

Three of the most prominent eastside Democratic clubs, Battle Grove, Eastern Democratic, and the Riverside Club, honored Lt. Governor Anthony Brown for his military service and combat tour of duty in Iraq, presenting him with a handmade, quilted blanket at Dundalk's Hard Yacht Cafe Wednesday night.

Local political leader Butch Henry brought together the leadership of Tim "Tank" Holland from Battle Grove, Larry Lee, of the Riverside Club, and Kitty Blythe from the East Side Club, recognizing the Lt. Governor for his service with a quilted blanket in the design of the Maryland state flag, along with an insciption of Brown's military achievements.

The blanket, handcrafted by Connie Olivares, took several weeks to make and Brown proudly accepted the gift, which was meet with applause from the enthusiastic gathering.

Addressing the local crowd, Brown shared his personal story, growing up in a family that struggled financially for a long period, but whose father stressed service to one's country and hard work. Brown's father became the first in the family to attend college and eventually went on to become a doctor and is still treating patients today at 87 years of age.

Brown, with undergraduate and law degrees from Harvard, is the highest elected Maryland official to serve a tour in Iraq – not a bad background for a 49-year-old man who seems poised to pursue higher office.

The Lt. Governor still serves as a colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve.

Asked about his future in politics, Brown did not rule anything out.

"I will continue to serve the citizens of the State of Maryland to the best of my ability," Brown said, "and in doing so, this service may provide additional opportunities for me to explore."

Congrats to Lt. Gov. Brown. On a side note I would hardly call those clubs prominent or Butch a political leader.

I respectfully disagree with Mr Franklin about the Battle Grove, Eastern Baltimore County & Riverside Democratic Clubs. As one that belongs to all three, I know what they do and have done throughout the years.
I do not know what his definition of prominent is because those three certainly are very prominent as per my Websters Dictionary version.
Thank you Buzz for a job well done, as usual. I am a fan.

Mr. Franklin I was going to leave an answer to the comment that these clubs are not prominent, but I believe it would be impossible for me to get you to understand that these clubs are prominent to the communities that they support and reside in. Personally, I have been and will continue to be proud of my membership in the BGDC. As for the Leadership Qualities of Mr. Henry, let me say that he is informed about the issues, that the integrity that he carries will with-stand scruitny from anyone. Also, should you ever be fortunate enough to be invited to one of his political greet and meets you will be ashame of your misguided comment. Hey Butch, I am proud to call you my brother.

I want thank Ron Cassie for doing such a great job as and editor. The man know his stuff. He did this while reporting on two other major stories.

I had the opportunity to have a nice conversation with Lt. Governor Brown's Deputy Chief of Staff, Maia Estes. I asked if down the road there might be a political future in store for her?

She smiled and said she thoroughly enjoyed her role behind the scenes and that is where she will stay. A real sharp lady. A movie is only as good as it's director.

Sean, when a man puts together a Bull Roast and draws over 500 people including the governor, and every east side politician in the county and state, I would say he is, as they say politically connected.

You show me a man who can get the governor to croon a tune on stage and I'll show you a man who has more than a few friends in politics.

Sean. I can not speak for the other clubs in the article but I can speak on the prominence of the Battle Grove Democratic Club. We were formed almost 80 years ago and have over 550 members. We own our own buildings and have been in the same location for over 30 years. On the political side, every major state and local office holder along with Senator Mikulski and Congressman Ruppersberger has visited and spoke at Battle Grove in the last few years. In 2008, when President Clinton came to Baltimore County to campaign for Hillary, he choose to speak at Battle Grove. On the community side, we sponsor multiple Girl Scout Troops, a childrens dance school, 2 floats in the Fourth of July Parade and have given over $50,000 in scholarships to local high school students. Also four other community groups meet at our hall monthly, including another local democratic club. I will let the people decide the prominence of Battle Grove now that they have the facts

As usual Mr. President, you call`em like you see`em. I would like to add an anecdote to your article, Most if not all of the major political figures are members of the BGDC. That says a whole lot about our definition of prominence.
Thank you and your officers and members for keeping us prominent.

Tim when a club can bring together Governor O'Malley, Sen. Mikulski along with to many other names to mention in one night at your club I would say that club has some serious clout.

I thought your comment to me last night about the Lt. Governor Brown being a good role model for our youth was spot right on.

I would say the BGDC is one of the premier clubs in the state.

Sean, You're giving them too much credit. When was the last time they had 25 people show up? Of course, when it wasn't a special event? It's hardly even democractic! They barely wanted to support Francot and O'malley in the last election! I recall many of the board memebers wearing Ehrlich stickers at a few fuctions this past campaign season. How ironic! BGDC at one point was a prominent club. However, there is to much corruption in the club they can barely stay afloat!

Graham thank you for your kind words. I have a correction to make. Lt. Governor Brown is the highest elected official in the country to serve in Iraq. I referenced his service to Maryland.

Another interesting fact according to the caller was that Vice President Joe Biden's son was the highest ranking elected official to serve in Afghanistan. At the time of his service he was the Attorney General of Delaware.

Once again Patch was on top of this story. You won't see this in the Sun.

Sean, how do take issue with a man of this stature. I was really moved by his story about his dad and the hard work he instilled in his children. Look at his accomplishments. He is a class act. I always call them separately on political issues.

That must be some feat in itself, being 87 years old and still seeing patients.

I may not agree with some political agendas but I think this man could be the next governor. I do think he might moderate more towards the center as most polls show we are a centrist to moderate country.

That is what Clinton did to capture his second term. I don't think Bill can touch Brown in class. Brown even has the poise of a military man.

BB, nice article! Its wonderful that these clubs gathered to specifically recognize Lt. Governor Brown for his military service and I am thrilled that you covered it. From the looks of that blanket in the photo, Ms./Mrs. Olivares put a lot of care and effort into making it. I dont live on the east side, but even I know that these clubs are prominent in the communities they serve and beyond. Also, I have had the good fortune of meeting Mr. Henry, and I concur entirely with Mr. O'Toole's analysis of his political knowledge and integrity. Anyone who heads to Annapolis during session on behalf of veterans and veteran organizations, organizes large and small scale events that attract politicians and their faithful, and promotes candidates as I have heard and seen him do is a political leader in my book.

Congratulations to the clubs and the work they have done for our community. What has LTGOV Brown done for the Maryland Military?????Not one piece of Military legislation has been proposed since he was in office. In fact, he has been active to quell any benefits for the military. You don't see many posts from any military or their families on his award or service. Maryland military families need support and Maryland turns there back every year and Brown turns his back.

Mr. Armstrong I think that you are functionally unable to comprehend what you write. I also think it goes deeper than that.

Read what you wrote if that is possible? First my name is not Bueller, or as you also like to refer, Dude, Bunker and so own.

Your comment states, 'Bueller strikes again," and yet YOU POSTED THE LINK!

I will say it again, YOU POSTED THE LINK! Do you even realize how utterly foolish you sound? And this comes from a a person who claims to have three college degrees and speaks 6 languages.

Just so the Lt. Governor knows, you also claim to be retired from the military with service in Desert Storm and Grenada. After numerous repeated request over a period of months you have failed to provide any evidence of any of your wild claims.

After that ludicrous statement which you made and attributed to me their are some serious issues going on there.

I have said this a long time ago, you are your own worst enemy and I think anyone can easily see that.

Do you really take the time to comprehend what you write or are you so consumed with issues you no longer have the ability to even understand it?

The article was about Lt. Governor's Brown commendable military record and not about your attempts to to discredit it.

He is a true military hero and you are a individual with what I think are some deep seated issues that only you can address.

Mr. Armstrong has a habit of throwing mud and when it doesn't stick you will not hear from him. He followed the same pattern about his claim of military service, college and his 6 languages.

I would hardly place him in the same class as the Lt. Governor who excelled not only his military record by also that of his public service.

This makes no sense to me. Why would the Lt. Governor even want to get near this is beyond me. It wouldn't be so bad if Currie and his attorneys weren't maintaining their client was not good on details, which is a stretch, since I think Currie has a masters degree.

If in the article Brown alludes to Currie as a disorganized legislator. What councilman does that remind you of?

As a leading contender to become a gubernatorial candidate why would you even consider getting involved in that mess?

Today, former Governor Bob Ehrlich testified on the stand in behalf of Currie. Ehrlich has nothing to lose, its just I can't understand why Brown would choose to get involved.

I don't talk to Cole that much unless I see him at a function. The FOP hung me out to flail in the breeze. I told him the ADA mess would not stop with me and the only thing that will get their attention would be the EEOC -- and that didn't either -- or the Feds.

I sat in his office when Cole called Homan's office about my pension paperwork. Cole had the speaker phone on and when questioned where my retirement papers were her voice cracked and told Cole she was not allowed to discuss my case.

If they, and I was hoping they would, try to steal my pension by slipping a medical by me, I was planning on a major lawsuit. They claimed they had set me the papers, but in fact did not.

I hear there will be 18 substantiated cases involving violations of the ADA and that will cost the county a ton of greenbacks. There are at least 14 more cases lined up by Ms. Kahill. She does not take prisoners.

Clever move the other night by deleting you comment. I didn't think you knew how to take care of those things.

I question it based on the man I wrote about seemed polished, professional and politically astute. Why get involved in a case where the defense is based on a rather lame attempt to discredit Currie's ability as a senator.

It smacks of the good ole boy network that is alive and well in Baltimore County.
