Airlines Collect Record Baggage Fees, Some Passengers Increasingly OK with them

Potentially more fees in store at BWI, Reagan National and Dulles airports for summer travel.

In 2012, airlines raked in more than $6 billion in baggage and change fees, solely accounting for a 3.7 percent profit margin, according to WTOP. The practice of collecting additional fees for the once-free baggage began in 2008, when prices for jet fuel rose nearly 50 percent as oil hit an all-time high. Since then, the fees have increased and are typically in the range of $25 for  the first checked bag and $35 for the second. These baggage fees added $3.5 billion to airline coffers in 2012, 3.8 percent more than in 2011. While some commercials make light of the anger and frustration caused by the additional fees, a J.D. Power & Associates survey cited by the Los Angeles Times shows that a greater percentage of passengers who pay to check…

Dundalk Chamber to Host Wounded Warrior Speaker

The Dundalk Chamber of Commerce will meet Thursday at the Poplar Inn.

The Dundalk Chamber of Commerce will host a representative from the U.S. Marine Corps' Wounded Warrior Regiment at its monthly luncheon this Thursday. Major Brian Bilski will be the featured speaker at the business gathering designed to remember "those who have given so much," according to an event flier. The luncheon will be held at 11:30 a.m. May 16, at the Poplar Inn, 7700 Wise Ave. A soup and sandwich buffet will be offered. The cost is $15 for members and $20 for nonmembers; advance payment is appreciated. Attendees are encouraged to bring three business cards for three separate prize drawings. Affordable Apartments for Low-Income Seniors Being Built in Dundalk

The Greens at Logan Field will provide 102 rental units for low- to moderate-income senior citizens.

County, state and federal officials will hold a ceremonial groundbreaking ceremony Tuesday for a low- to moderate-income senior apartment complex already under construction on Dundalk Avenue near the Logan Village Shopping Center. The ceremony will be held at 11:30 a.m. May 14, at the construction site, 3455 Dundalk Ave. Officials scheduled to attend the groundbreaking include Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz, Maryland State Senator Norman Stone, Baltimore County Councilman John Olszewski Sr., U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Field Office Director Carol B. Dundalk Wendy's Heavily Damaged in Weekend Fire

The Merritt Boulevard restaurant sustained about $180,000 in damage.

The Wendy's restaurant on Merritt Boulevard in Dundalk was heavily damaged by a fire early Sunday morning. Crews were dispatched to the eatery in the 1300 block of Merritt Boulevard at 5:41 a.m. for the report of smoke showing from the building, according to Cpl. Cathy Batton, a spokeswoman for the Baltimore County Police Department. Upon arrival, crews discovered that a fire had started in the kitchen of the restaurant, which was not occupied at the time. The fire was brought under control at 6:13 a.m., Batton said. Firefighters have determined that the fire, which caused about $180,000 in damage, was accidental, according to Batton. Eighteen pieces of equipment responded to fight the blaze.

Family Dollar Stores Recall Tower Heaters

There have been ten reports of overheating, but no reports of fires, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Family Dollar Stores have issued a recall of Optimus Tower Quartz Heaters after receiving ten reports of overheating, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSP). There have been some reports of temperature knobs melting but no reports of fires, injuries or property damage at this time, CPSC reports. The heaters were sold exclusively at Family Dollar Stores from September 2012 through December 2012 for about $35.
