BGE Increases Crews in Anticipation of Power Outages

Baltimore Gas and Electric Company is preparing to respond if damaging winds cause power outages due to Saturday's storms.

Baltimore Gas and Electric Company has mobilized its storm center and increased the number of crews in the field to respond to weather-related outages from Saturday's storm activity, according to a news announcement.

BGE plans to continue to monitor the weather and the impact of the forecasted high winds and increase in rainfall that is expected to enter into its central Maryland service territory Saturday evening, possibly causing electric service interruptions, the release states.

BGE reports that the peak of the severe weather is expected bring sustained winds of 25-30 miles per hour, with wind gusts ranging from 50-60 miles per hour. These weather conditions could cause whole trees and tree limbs to come down onto power lines and other electric delivery equipment, interrupting service to customers, according to the releas. “BGE is closely monitoring the current weather system and has made the decision mobilize its storm center and increase the number of crews available in anticipation of possible power outages resulting from the forecasted high wind,” said A. Customers with special needs, such as those who may be elderly, handicapped or dependent on electricity for medical equipment, should have alternate arrangements in place should they experience an extended power outage, the release states.

Customers using a generator or space heater should follow manufacturer instructions and be sure to locate generators in well-ventilated areas.

BGE suggests customers be prepared for any outages by keeping the following items readily available:

  • Flashlights—not candles
  • Fresh batteries
  • Battery-operated clock radio
  • Corded telephone
  • Fully-charged cell phone
  • Non-perishable foods
  • Blankets

Customers also should consider filling up their cars in case a power outage affects service to neighborhood gas stations. For BGE customers who rely on well water, filling a bathtub with water in advance of severe weather is strongly encouraged, the release states.

According to the release, BGE's restoration priorities are public safety issues and critical facilities, such as 911 centers, hospitals and pumping stations. Then restoration is generally scheduled so that the greatest number of customers can be restored as quickly and as safely as possible. However, in cases of extended power outages, consideration is also given to customers who have been without service for the longest.

Customers are always reminded to stay away from downed power lines and to report them immediately by calling 410-685-0123.

Power outages should be reported by calling BGE’s automated system at 877-778-2222. For more information from BGE about storm preparation and how customers can protect their families and property, go to bge.com.
