Dundalk's 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony To Include Prayer, Candlelight Vigil

Community members are invited to Dundalk's annual 9/11 remembrance ceremony, set for 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Heritage Park.

Over the years, Dundalk's tiny Heritage Park has always been there to bring the community together.

The small, rectangular piece of open space in the heart of Dundalk's downtown has hosted Heritage Fair, Santa in the Park, Concerts in the Park and any number of other special events held by a variety of organizations.

So the well-used village green seemed the obvious choice 12 years ago when community leaders sought to hold a vigil shortly after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on New York, Washington, D.C. and Pennsylvania.

Tonight, the community is again invited to Heritage Park for a remembrance ceremony that will combine music, prayer and fellowship to remember those lost on that dark day in American history and to honor the first responders who risked their lives to save others.

The event is titled "We Will never Forget," an apt name as far as many are concerned.

Singer Malvilyn Statham, who performs each year with her husband and pianist Calvin, said it is important to remember the day.

"We want to share the time with the community and to let people know we still remember and we still care," Malvilyn Statham said Wednesday. "It's our ministry and as long as they have the event, we'll be there."

The event traditionally combines music and prayer to remember the attacks and to honor the memories of those lost.

Around sunset, participants are encouraged to light candles that will cast a soft and soothing glow over the remainder of the event.
