Gloria Nelson Named Baltimore County Woman of the Year

The title of Baltimore County Woman of the Year will stay in Dundalk for a second straight year.

Turner Station community leader Gloria Nelson has been named this year's Woman of the Year by the Baltimore County Commission for Women. She succeeds Dundalk resident Irene Spatafore, who received the honor last year.

In naming Nelson to the honor, commission officials lauded her for service to her community, a volunteer effort that has spanned 31 years.

Nelson has represented Turner Station on several citizen committees, including one that advised the Maryland Port Administration on dredging projects. She served as vice chairwoman of the Turner Station Conservation Team and has worked with Turner Station Recreation Council programs and other youth activities for more than 31 years.

"Gloria is a greatly admired community leader who is passionate, selfless, focused and tireless," commission officials said in a statement.

The commission also announced that Perry Hall High School senior McCall Behringer has been named the 2013 Young Woman of the Year, and the late Judge S. Ann Probst will be posthumously honored with the Woman Making a Difference Award.

Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz will recognize the women in a ceremony at the Towson Courthouse at 6 p.m. March 21.
