Photos of the Day: The Sparrows Point Blue Crab

A fiberglass crab from the Baltimore Crabtown Project makes me yearn for the summer.

As I found myself arriving early to a Sparrows Point vs Dundalk wrestling match, I was drawn to photograph the four-foot tall sky-blue tie-dyed crab located on campus.

The crab has long been a powerful symbol for the Dundalk/Edgemere community: how many countless Dundalk fathers, sons and brothers have made a living harvesting crabs from the Chesapeake Bay or just crabbing for sport. How many countless crab feasts have been eaten at local fire halls, parks and back yards.

This way of life has been threatened in recent years as pollutants have taken over the bay, shrinking local crab harvests to a fraction of what they once were.

This statue, left over from the 2005 Baltimore Crabtown Project, makes a perfect symbol for life in Dundalk reminding us of the fond memories of summertime crab feasts, as well as the fragile nature of the crab's habitat.
