At RG Steel: Could This Sign Hang in a Workplace Today?

What do you think the message is of this old sign at the former Bethlehem Steel/ RG Steel plant in Sparrows Point?

Dundalk Patch reader Justin Lacy is working for a company doing some environmental work at the now closed Sparrows Point steel plant, known most recently as RG Steel.

He posted this picture on Dundalk Patch's Facebook page with this comment: "Sparrows Point Steel Mill. Our company has been doing environmental work at the mill and I saw this sign hanging in the shop near the B.O.F. I can't believe it stayed up that long in our politically correct world we now live in. Gonna miss the mill. Stay classy baby."

The sign reads: "Sex and safety are here to stay. Practice Safety. Enjoy sex each day."

I can't decide if the sign was installed around the time more women started working at the plant, and is a (however subtle) suggestion to curb harassment; promotes safe work practices and birth control in one message; or just simply tells its employees—in 1950s style—to strive for work/life balance that encourages a good and safe work ethic while saving time for recreation—or in this case, procreation.

Does anyone know the history and/or the intended message of the sign? Tell us in the comments.
