The Guess Who Lives Up to Billing

The Canadian rockers, one of the world's biggest bands in the late 1960s and early 1970s, pulled out all their hits Saturday night.

Anticipation best summed up the vibe of the large crowd gathered Saturday night on the second day of the Dundalk Heritage Fair.

In 1969 and 1970, with hits like “These Eyes,” “No Sugar Tonight,” “Share the Land” and “American Woman,” the Canadian rockers known as The Guess Who were one of the top bands in the world. They’re also one of the biggest bands ever to take the Dundalk Heritage Fair’s main stage.

They didn’t disappoint.

The set was packed full of the band’s hits. Three songs into the show, the well-known tunes started flowing. “Laughing” was followed by “Undun,” which was introduced by drummer and original member Garry Peterson as his favorite song the band ever recorded.

Enthusiastic for the whole show, the crowd cheered mightily at the conclusion of each song. The folks in attendance clearly enjoyed themselves, dancing and singing along to hit after hit.

Before the concert, fair officials asked the audience to remain seated during the show so everyone could see, but the crowd rose to their feet with encouragement from the band for one of their biggest hits, “No Sugar Tonight.”

By this point, the band was on fire and could do no wrong.

“Share the Land” got the crowd worked up further, and then they dropped the song everyone was waiting for – a rocking seven-minute version of “American Woman.”

The Guess Who was sly about the beginning of the song. They started it out with an extended intro that kept the crowd guessing what was coming. But alas, the well-known chords were struck and Dundalk erupted. It was a powerful rendition and the fans, back on their feet singing and dancing, loved every minute.

“I usually come every year,” said Joseph Lucas, a Dundalk resident. “I saw them (the Guess Who) before years ago. It’s one of the bigger bands to be here.”

Before the show, Alecia Cale from Pittsburgh, one of numerous out-of-town visitors expected this weekend for the live music, including Eddie Money tonight, said she couldn’t wait to hear the band.

““I think it’s awesome (they’re here),” she said.

They closed the night with “These Eyes” and “No Time.”

After the show, The Guess Who stuck around and met with fans for autographs and pictures.

“The Guess Who is one of the biggest things to be here,” said longtime fairgoer David Andrews. “I was at the first Heritage Fair in 1976. I was in the 11th grade at Patapsco. I try to come every year.”
