Redner's Warehouse Market is confident about its new Eastpoint store's ability to succeed.
After a sneak peek open house held Tuesday night, Redner's officials held a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Eastern Avenue store on Wednesday and declared the store open for business.
Despite the , Redner's, which sits on the mall campus, is expected to fill a big need in the community and thrive at its new location, company officials said.
Corporate spokesman Eric White said Wednesday he is not aware of the planned auction of the mall, which is owned by Thor Equities, according to a report in the Baltimore Business Journal.
The Eastpoint Redner's occupies a former Shoppers grocery store building, which was renovated and retrofitted for its new use.
White said the Redner's property is owned by Baltgem Development Corp. of Missouri and the Antonoff Family Trust of Colorado, and the grocer has a long-term lease on the building.
"I couldn't tell you that that news has come to me, I'll have to ask our real estate people," White said Wednesday when asked about the mall auction possibly affecting the new market. "But I can tell you we are very confident in the success of that store."
Shortly before 4 p.m. Wednesday, the new store had processed 2,001 orders.
"I was bagging," White said. "People were lined up half way up the aisle—everyone pitched in."
The store will settle down and likely won't maintain the intensity of opening day, White said. But company officials anticipate a busy and successful business in a community in need of a grocery store.
The Eastpoint Redner's is the company's fourth in Maryland, according to White. The grocer, trading under the names of Redner's Warehouse Markets and Quick Shoppes, has 56 stores in Pennsylvania, Delaware and Maryland.
Dundalk's store is a warehouse market, with the mission of offering customers a good shopping experience with warehouse savings that get passed on to consumers, White said.
"We don't require that our customers have membership cards to take advantage of savings," White said. "The sale prices are available to everyone."
The store will offer a "Pump Perks" program, which will offer discounted gas price breaks according to dollars spent. A membership card will be required to participate in that program, White said.
