Edgemere Restaurant Now Serving Its Logo Crustacean

The Bay Shore Bar and Grill now offers steamed crabs on the weekends.

For years, the logo of Edgemere's Bay Shore Bar and Grill has been a big red crab.

The crustacean adorns the sign that stands sentry over the parking lot; it graces the front of the restaurant's menus and it's splashed on custom-printed plastic beverage cups used behind the bar.

The one place the crab was missing from was the kitchen.

Until now.

Steamed crabs are now being served at the venerable eatery, at least on weekends.

"We're starting with just Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays to see how it goes," cook Renee Hoover said.

Hoover and partner Chad Slivenski have been steaming crabs as a side business for 10 years, and have a loyal customer base.

"They follow me around," Slivenski said of his customers. "I have people who come from Randallstown to get crabs from me."

The seasoning is Hoover's secret blend, which is made by the JO spice company.

"They have Renee's recipe and make the seasoning just for us," Slivenski said. "And JO's is the best in the business."

When Hoover started working at Bay Shore late this spring, she pitched the idea of crabs to owner George Kotroso. They worked out a contractual agreement and the steamed delicacies made their bebut about a month ago.

"Last weekend, we had crabs from Maryland and they were good," Slivenski said before the  July 4th holiday. "They're sorting ones and twos now; most of the junk is gone and they're hardening up.

The crabs are running. Now the ambitious Dundalk couple just needs to get word out that steamed crabs are once again on the menu at the Bay Shore Bar and Grill.

To inquire about crabs at the restaurant, call 410-477-1646. For information about crabs during the week, call Slivenski, 443-985-0093.

"I'll even deliver," Slivenski said.
