Edgemere's Shallow Creek Cafe to Close March 22

The owners of the used bookstore and cafe fought the economy until they had no choice but to close.

After giving it their all, the owners of the Shallow Creek Bookstore Cafe in Edgemere have decided to close their doors for good.

"It is with great sadness that we must announce that Shallow Creek will be closing permanently on Friday, March 22, 2013," the owners said in a Facebook post. "It has been a privilege and pleasure to serve our community for the past four and a half years."

Sisters Laura Dernoga and Lynette Christensen and their mother, Gail Hoffman, opened the business in October 2008, just before the stock market crashed and the government officially declared the nation was in an economic recession.

In the Facebook post, the owners said that gift cards will be honored during the remaining time the store is open, and they welcome the community's support until the doors close next Friday.

The news saddened regular customers, and many posted their condolences on Facebook.

"I think I'm going to cry," Darlene Prassinas wrote. "It's back to frozen TV dinners for lunch at (Sparrows Point High School)."

"Oh, no … it saddens me to hear this … especially for a wonderful place that was so good for the community," Brenda Anlitz wrote. "My best and gratitude to everyone."

Shallow Creek's owners said it was their goal "to provide a relaxing, family friend customer service for our community and friends.

"We hope you will have many fond memories of your time at Shallow Creek and (we) thank you once again for your support."
