Construction on a new fast food restaurant has begun in the parking lot of the Eastpoint Mall, a management administrative assistant confirmed Friday afternoon.

Parking lot pavement has been broken for a new McDonald’s restaurant in the south end of the parking lot, on a site accessible from North Point Boulevard, typically an area where carnivals set up shop.

“It could be open at the end of October, that’s what they’re shooting for, or it could be later in November,” said Nikki Walton, of Eastpoint Mall management.

The management is looking at other locations for the carnivals, including the former site of the AMF bowling alley, Walton said.

In the 1980s and '90s, there was a McDonald’s restaurant inside the Eastpoint Mall.

There is a McDonald's restaurant currently across the street from the mall on North Point Boulevard, but that restaurant is run by a different franchise owner and is not expected to be affected by the construction of the Eastpoint Mall McDonald's, according to a manager at the existing McDonald's.
