PHOTO: Is America Still as Strong as Steel?

A former steel plant employee is saddened each time he drives by the sign that touts America is "strong as steel."

Last week, Dundalk Patch posted a picture of an old workplace sign still hanging at the now-closed Sparrows Point steel mill.

The sign, which originated in perhaps the 1950s or ’60s, encouraged workers to practice safety and enjoy sex each day.

The picture was submitted by Justin Lacy, whose company is performing environmental work at the site known as Bethlehem Steel for nearly a century and most recently known as RG Steel.

After having a laugh, another reader sent a picture with a much more serious message. It states simply but with passion and pride, "America Strong as Steel!"

"I continually lobbied to fix up the sign whose picture is attached," the man wrote in an email to Dundalk Patch. "We never generated any interested before they went bankrupt, but even today when I drive past it it makes me a little sad."

Do you think America is still "strong as steel?" Talk about it in the comments section.
