Steelworkers Union President Stepping Down

The Sparrows Point local 9477 chief has resigned following the approval of a new working agreement with RG Steel this spring.

As promised in May when United Steelworkers union members approved a working agreement with RG Steel, the Sparrows Point union president said he has stepped down from his position.

John Cirri, president of local 9477, was elected to his current term as president in April 2009. He confirmed in an e-mail to Patch that he has resigned from his position.

Cirri has served as union official for 23 years.

The elected vice president, Jeff Mikula, would take over as president when he steps aside, according to union bylaws.

Both the Warren and Wheeling union memberships voted against the recent agreement. However, the 82.6 percent margin in favor from the Sparrows Point steelworkers was enough to overcome those votes to approve the measure.

“Now that the sale is completed, the contract ratified, my job is done,” Cirri said after Sparrows Point union members voted overwhelmingly in favor of the contract with RG Steel.
