Intern at Arc Baltimore Dundalk Center Honored
Janice Toothman, a psychology intern with The Arc Baltimore who provides therapy to individuals at The Arc’s Dundalk Center, is the recipient of The Arc’s Intern Service Award. The award recognizes the impact student interns can have on The Arc community, even if it may be just for a semester.
Janice was recognized by The Arc because her dedication has been unparalleled. Janice had some personal challenges that could have put an end to her interning, but she persevered. After each of three hospitalizations and then the tragic loss of her sister to cancer, she would return. She knew in particular that the holidays can be a time when many individuals might struggle with past experiences, so she came back for them.

Janice did all of this despite the daily challenges she faces because she is completely blind and partially deaf. Her seeing-eye dog accompanies her to therapy sessions, and she has a microphone for her sessions so she can hear everyone clearly. She also started a therapy group that helps the individuals not only speak up for themselves, abut help each other as peers.
