Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center’s Diversity Council Named as One of the Top 10 in the United States

The Johns Hopkins Bayview Diversity Council was honored by the Association of Diversity Councils as one of the top 25 diversity councils in the United States for a third consecutive year. This year, the council ranked tenth, improving their standings from the previous year. The 2013 Top 25 Diversity Council Honors Award™ recognizes groups that lead diversity processes in their organizations and demonstrate results in their workforce, workplace and marketplace.

“To earn this honor for a third year truly speaks to the value and impact of the work of our Diversity Council,” says Richard Bennett, M.D., president of Johns Hopkins Bayview and co-chair of its Diversity Council. “The Council’s work makes a positive difference in how we provide care to patients and interact with colleagues.”

Applications were submitted by council groups and evaluated on contributions and achievements in four categories: Demonstrated Council Results; Demonstrated Management Commitment; Measurement and Accountability; and Communication and Education.

“This honor represents the commitment and continued progress our Diversity Council has made over the last three years in integrating the principles of diversity, inclusion and cultural competency into the Hopkins Bayview culture,” says Karen Jones, manager of diversity, inclusion and career development. “Demonstrating these principles and practices with our staff, patients and community becomes vital as we strive to become the community’s hospital of choice.”

The recipients include corporations, the military and nonprofit organizations. Joining Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center on the list of top 25 diversity councils are Comcast, FedEx Freight, American Airlines and General Motors, to name a few.

The Johns Hopkins Bayview Diversity Council serves as an advisory group to the Medical Center leadership and works across departments and specialties to create strategies to foster cultural competence, civility, respect and collegiality, robust and diverse talent pools, leadership development, and mutually beneficial relationships with the community. 

Some of the Council’s projects include educational workshops, internal (employee) and external Web sites, leadership and management development programs, an inspirational civility and respect campaign, and a Summer Scholars program that exposes students to careers in health care.

By integrating diversity and inclusion into the culture and operations of the Medical Center, the Council stimulates a welcoming, healing environment to meet the diverse needs of its community and provides safe, high quality health care for all patients.
