Baltimore Archbishop O'Brien Elevated to Cardinal
The 72-year-old was named to the College of Cardinals on Friday
Archbishop Edwin O'Brien has been elevated to the College of Cardinals by Pope Benedict XVI, according to the Archdiocese of Baltimore.
A ceremony to make the the elevation official will be held at the Vatican on Feb. 18.
“This is an honor I humbly accept and proudly share with the priests and people of the Archdiocese of Baltimore," O'Brien said in a news release. "While this honor may be a reflection of my new position, I believe it is also the result of the great collaboration and zealous faith that I have so consistently experienced in the Church in Baltimore."

O'Brien, 72, is the fourth Archbishop of Baltimore to be named a Cardinal. Cardinal James Gibbons, Cardinal Lawrence Shehan and Cardinal William Keeler previously served as Archbishop of Baltimore before their elevations, according to a news release.
