Dundalk Woman Tracks Every Penny Paid in Taxes, Fees

Alice Scanlon itemizes her total tax and fee bill for theblaze.com.

Dundalk resident Alice Scanlon has an 18-column — and growing — spreadsheet on which she tracks every penny she pays in taxes and fees.

Inspired by a comment made by President Obama, urging all citizens to pay their fair share in taxes, Scanlon has tracked every cent she and her husband have paid in taxes and fees throughout 2012.

According to an article on theblaze.com, Scanlon has kept track of gas taxes, state and federal taxes, Maryland's special alcohol tax, cell phone taxes, Chesapeake Bay restoration fees, road tolls, mandatory union dues and many more "hidden taxes" she kept discovering.

"There is a much bigger picture than most taxpayers know," Scanlon told theblaze.com.

So far, the Scanlons — husband Michael was laid off when RG Steel closed—have paid $26,106.93 in taxes and fees, and they expect that figure to reach more than $30,000 by the end of the year.

The $26,000 figure represents 27 percent of the couple's combined income, she told the website's reporter.
