Many Plan to Run for Office in Essex-Dundalk, But Who's Actually Filed?

At least four of five state- and county-level seats representing parts of Essex and all of Greater Dundalk will change hands in 2014.

The face of Essex-Dundalk's elected leadership will change considerably with the 2014 elections.

Retirements and aspirations to shoot for higher offices mean that councilmanic and state legislative slates for the two communities are wide open.

Many Essex-Dundalk residents have announced they plan to run for office or are still studying their chances, while many others have already officially filed to run for Baltimore County Council and the Maryland General Assembly.

As of Dec. 26, the following candidates have formally filed to run for office representing the Dundalk and Essex communities in the state's 6th legislative district and the county's 7th councilmanic district, according to the Maryland Board of Elections website:

Baltimore County Council, 7th District

Democrats (date filed):

Joseph A. DiCara (Oct. 25)
Buddy Staigerwald (Nov. 12)
Ronald Clyde Yeatman (Dec. 3)

Republicans:
Todd Crandell (Nov. 1)

State Senate, 6th District

Democrats (date filed):
John Olszewski Jr. (Oct. 23)

Republicans:
Johnny Ray Salling (Sept. 10)

House of Delegates, 6th District

Democrats (date filed):

Jonathan H. Campbell (Oct. 7)
Marcus A. Foreman (Sept. 3)
Jake Mohorovic (Dec. 18)
Eric Washington (Oct. 21)
Mike Weir Jr. [incumbent] (Nov. 6)

Republicans:
Robin L. Grammer Jr. (April 11)
Domenico "Dan" Liberatore (July 26)
Ric Metzgar (July 26)

Longtime state Sen. Norman Stone announced his plans to retire at the end of this term, retiring after serving the Greater Dundalk community for more than 50 years.

Del. John Olszewski Jr. opted to run for Stone's Senate seat, and Del. Joseph "Sonny" Minnick said he would not run again. At least two seats will change hands in the state delegate race because of those moves.

Weir Jr. is the only incumbent delegate running to retain his seat.

Four-term County Councilman John Olszewski Sr. in November announced he would not run again and instead will help his son and Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown run their respective campaigns for state Senate and governor.

After little to no turnover in elected leadership in many years, at least four of five seats at the state and county levels will change hands in 2014.

Check the Maryland State Board of Elections website to check all state and county candidates who have filed to date and to access their contact information.
