Berkshire Area Fall Bread and Cheese Creek Cleanup 9/15/12

Our Bread and Cheese Creek cleanup is Saturday, September 15th and we are very lucky to be running this clean-up in association with many great organizations, with whom this would not be possible. These groups include the International Costal Cleanup (ICC) and Baltimore C...ounty Department of Environmental Protection and Sustainability (DEPS).

We will arrive on site at 6:00 AM, and registration will begin at 7:00 AM. We will give a brief orientation and instructions at 8:00 AM then immediately begin work on the stream. One group of volunteers will start at the section next to Burger King and the other will begin at the section at Poplar Avenue.

Site Directions:
Registration will be in the field next to next to 7599 Durwood Road. The GPS coordinates are 39.283759,-76.508081. From the 1000 block of Merritt Boulevard, make a right turn immediately after Burger King (1010 Merritt Blvd.) onto Rabon Avenue. Take the next right onto Larkfield Road. Pass the next intersection making your second right onto Durwood Road and follow until it dead ends at the field. What to Wear, What to Bring…
A limited number of hand tools will be available for loan, so we recommend bringing along a tool (or tools) of your own as well. Rakes, shovels, timber saws, pitch forks, picks, and hand axes are all great options as well as similar tools. Be sure to wear long pants, waterproof boots or old tennis shoes, hats, sunscreen and insect repellent. We will be providing gloves for everyone!

We still need Volunteers for:

Friday, September 14th - Volunteers Needed for Clean-up Prep- The day before the Bread and Cheese Creek Cleanup, we will be working with a crew from Baltimore County Department of Public Works (DPW) to do some site preparation in order to make sure our volunteers have easier access in to the stream. We will also be packing up tables and chairs, rest tents and marking locations for the portable toilet and dumpsters. If any volunteers would like to assist with this activity as well, please contact us.

Saturday, September 15th:

6:00 AM – We need early morning volunteers to help unpack the trucks and set up the site!

7:00 AM – We need a few volunteers to help staff registration, as well tool and boot sign out!

8:00 AM – We need tons of volunteers to help clean up Bread and Cheese Creek in the Berkshire Area

1:00 PM – We need volunteers to help us with site breakdown and cleanup as well as packing up

Calling All Volunteers Remember, there plenty of ways for volunteers to participate.  We will need every type of person of every ability level to contribute and assist with the Clean Up. Though it is true we will need people to dig out shopping carts and haul trash to the dumpsters,  we can use people to run water, food, tools, and trash bags (both empty and full) to individuals in the creek. People to sort recyclables from the debris removed. People will be needed to help staff registration and toll/boot sign-out as well as many other less strenuous activities. We are also authorized to sign-off on Community Service and Service Learning Hours for students. The more people we have, the easier the work will be for everyone.   Please feel free to pass this information on to other who might be interesting in helping as well. As my grandfather always said, “Many hands makes the work light”

Calling all Trucks, Jeeps, and ATV’s Last year, volunteers with these vehicles were invaluable!!! These vehicles were used to pull shopping carts from the mud, (and a bath tub!), haul filled trash bags from extraction sites to dumpsters and deliver water to hard working volunteers! If you have one of these vehicles and don’t mind using it to help out, please bring it and if you have any chain or rope that would be fantastic too!

We’ve removed the ability to reply as we work to make improvements. Learn more here
