Moment of Zen

Meet Zen, a gentle, sweet Shar-Pei looking for his forever home.

Need a little calm canine energy in your life?

Meet Zen, a laid-back and super-sweet Chinese Shar-Pei who’s about five years old and weighs in at 50 pounds. Zen is a unique and striking dog who has a very gentle way about him, and just wants to be loved and to find his new place in the world.

After being purchased from an Arizona breeder, Zen was surrendered by his owner who claimed he was working longer hours and wasn’t able to care for him. Poor Zen lived in a home with his family for over four years and then suddenly found himself abandoned in a shelter for six long months. This is, unfortunately, a story that happens to good dogs every day. Because of his sweet, calm demeanor, Zen quickly became a staff favorite at the shelter, and they called in Mutts Matter to help move him to a less stressful environment and find his new family.

Zen has settled in quickly at his new foster home that includes two dog-savvy foster parents, two pup siblings and a cat. He came into the house very respectfully and a little cautious and fell right into place in the pack. Zen does well with calm, stable dogs and his foster siblings are teaching him the rules of the house. He likes to play and romp with his pack, but is not overly assertive and is very eager to please his foster family. Zen also met with the resident cat that rules the roost and they’ve come to an understanding.

Like many rescue pups, Zen is a little timid and hesitant around men at first, but after a few days he’s started to trust his foster dad, who takes him on all kinds of fun outings and walks. He warmed up right away to his foster mom and follows her everywhere, and he was quickly comfortable with me when I came to visit, gently taking treats and allowing me sit right next to him. He is such a sweet, gentle soul that you wonder how anyone could give this special boy up.

Zen is already discovering the joys of a good home life, whether that’s hanging out with his pack watching TV, playing chase in the yard, or going on his daily walks. He loves to go outside, smell all the new scents, and enjoy the experience of exploring a new environment. He plays with all of his toys, and has already identified his favorite spot in the house, a cushy dog bed in a prime location to keep an eye on his humans and be surrounded by his chew toy treasures. It’s also a great spot to watch the front door, and he dutifully lets his foster family know when visitors arrive.

Zen will be a really easy pup to add to your family, and given a little time will settle in well and make someone an awesome companion. He’s already potty-trained, crate-trained, walks well on a leash, and knows his basic commands like “sit,” “down,” and “shake.” He’s a very treat-motivated dog and eager to please, so he learns quickly. He would do well in a home with cats or other calm dogs, and we’d really like to find him a zen-like home that matches his laid-back energy level.

Like most Shar-Pei's, Zen will have some special skin care requirements that you will need to be familiar with, and he’s currently on a special diet to keep his skin and coat looking healthy.

I read this blog all the time and have never seen a dog of that kind. It came into perspective when you mentioned it's origin.

Beautiful dog. They are so sweet and loveable dogs. I had one for 13+ years and miss him dearly. Zen looks a lot like Cole too. He was even black with a red collar. Zen will make an awesome edition to any home.

Hey Buzz. This was my first time meeting a Shar-Pei too, they are not common in our shelters or in the rescue. I was impressed. Zen is more adorable than his pictures and has such a sweet, calm demeanor too.

Thanks Christopher. If you decide you are ready to add to your family, let me know. It would be great to find him a home that is familiar with the breed.

He is beautiful! My husband & I had a black sharpei for about 12 yrs or so and he was the best dog ever! He passed away at 14 this past September... Their usual life expectency is 10yrs!
However, this breed does require some maintenance as they do often have stomach and skin issues... But, in, my opinion, its nothing too horrible and its totally worth it!

Hey Erika. I happen to know where there is a great Shar-Pei in need of a new home...wink wink.

The sad part is there are so many more Zen's in the world. That commercial they run on TV is very moving. How can you not care.

I hear you loud and clear Buzz. That is why it is so important to rescue. There are literally millions of dogs like Zen waiting in shelters for someone to give them a chance. Thanks for reading our blog...We love the Patch community.

I may be interested I have Zen. We are a family of 5. Husb and 3 girls (11, 13, and 16). They are in Michigan on vacation. We live near Manassas. We have a 7 y/o male cocker spaniel. He has severe dry eyes with frequent infections. Please let me know if Zen is available. I have always wanted a shadowing and he may be a good fit for our family. Where does the foster family live?

What does the closing of a Pharmacy have to do with the Governor? Nothing.
"Woody" H Wood June 19, 2013 at 07:07 am
It's what the Governor had to do with the closing of a lot of businesses due to over regulation andRead More spending he promotes.
Wayne Monroe June 19, 2013 at 09:45 pm
It probably has more to do with the franchise fee and the resulting higher prices.
Wayne Monroe June 18, 2013 at 01:39 pm
Actually, if the country hadn't become a natural gas exporter rather than an importer the LNG plantRead More probably would have proceeded. Opponents raised such a fuss about the dredging required but if the state wants to dredge, step aside. They'll do what they want.
Dundalk Donnie June 18, 2013 at 02:16 pm
...and now they are changing over Cove Point from an import terminal to an export terminal. TheyRead More better order some more cranes from Shanghai Zenhui in China they take a while to build and transport here and the worldwide demand for them is huge. Those new container ships can transport 15,000 containers whereas the current ones max out at 5,000.
Wayne Monroe June 19, 2013 at 09:44 pm
It remains to be seen how many of those Panamax container ships actually make the trip up the bayRead More when they can be handled at Norfolk and the EPA insists on them burning that low sulphur fuel.

MIKE JOIN DUNDALK UNITED a group of tax payers tired of being lie to..
James P Samm April 30, 2013 at 01:01 pm
Well gee whiz Mr Hunt, I guess we should just roll over and take what is shoved to us.Kind of likeRead More they do in North Korea. This is a free country with officials elected BY THE PEOPLE, FOR THE PEOPLE of which they represent. If the people that elect those official don't like how they are acting, WE THE PEOPLE have the right to complain about it!! Just like YOU just did.
Mike Hunt May 7, 2013 at 03:14 am
Mr. Samm, this situation is nothing like North Korea. WE, the PEOPLE, elected the councilman toRead More represent us, that is correct; however, I DID NOT elect Dundalk United to REPRESENT DUNDALK! They are a group of assholes who want nothing but the same shit in this area. We have to expand our minds if we want something better than we currently have. When they start doing that, let me know!
