Obituary: Louis F. Markel, Edgemere Boat Yard Owner

The retired U.S. Department of Defense employee ran Markel's Boat Yard, founded by his father in 1941.

Louis Frederick Markel, the owner and operator of Markel's Boat Yard in Edgemere, died of kidney failure Nov. 23. He was 72.

He was born and raised at the North Point Creek marina founded in 1941 by his father, Louis F. Markel, according to an obituary in the Baltimore Sun.

Markel, a Sparrows Point High School graduate, worked for the U.S. Department of Defense's Investigative Services until he retired in 1982 to take over the boat yard's operations, according to the Sun report. 

Markel was preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Dorothy Markel, and four siblings and half-siblings, according to a death notice on the Ruck Funeral Homes website.

He is survived by many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at the Duda-Ruck Funeral Home of Dundalk on Nov. 27, followed by interment at Parkwood Cemetery.
