Baltimore County Police: No Chlorine Spill in Sparrows Point

An unusual odor in the Greater Dundalk area Friday was caused by torches being used to cut through rusted steel as the former Sparrows Point steel plant is being dismantled.

Dundalk-Edgemere residents may have noticed a strange odor in the air Friday, but Baltimore County Police Department officials laid to rest rumors of a toxic chemical spill or industrial accident.

"The odor in "Sparrows Point today (was) caused by workers using torches to slice through rusted steel," police spokeswoman Elise Armacost said today via the department's Twitter account. "Rumors of a chlorine leak are false."

Crews are dismantling buildings at the former Bethlehem Steel plant in Sparrows Point.
