Baltimore County Police: No Chlorine Spill in Sparrows Point

An unusual odor in the Greater Dundalk area Friday was caused by torches being used to cut through rusted steel as the former Sparrows Point steel plant is being dismantled.

Dundalk-Edgemere residents may have noticed a strange odor in the air Friday, but Baltimore County Police Department officials laid to rest rumors of a toxic chemical spill or industrial accident.

"The odor in "Sparrows Point today (was) caused by workers using torches to slice through rusted steel," police spokeswoman Elise Armacost said today via the department's Twitter account. "Rumors of a chlorine leak are false."

OK. That's good it was checked out. Great that it's just part of the process of people making money converting the old steel mill property into a new, long range commercial enterprise. I loved them mills, for what they were. Going past there to visit relative's homes "Down the Point" and in Edgemere - from 1955 to next time I go Down Edgemere - the ever-looming mill structures seemed like our only mountain range. Industrial beauty. I need to get down there and do some more - legal from the public road - photographs and videos of the place; but for now - here is a link to my small set of steel mill photography already published: http://www.flickr.com/photos/ursusdave/sets/72157624487372039/
