Boat Rescue Under Way Near Hart-Miller Island

The vessel is reported to be on fire and taking on water.

A boat rescue is currently under way near Hart-Miller Island, according to Baltimore County Police Department officials.

Police received a call at about 4:27 p.m. about a boat fire, though it isn't clear whether there actually is a fire on board, according to police spokeswoman Julia Hardgrove.

"Our air unit is on the scene, and he does not see any smoke but does see a boat that's taking on water," she said in a phone interview.

Callers told police that people are still on the boat and that it is smoking and taking on water, Hardgrove said.

"We do not know how many people are on the boat or what kind of boat it is," she said.

As a precaution, Baltimore City is sending a fire rescue boat to the scene and a diver is on the way, according to Hardgrove.

"But that is precautionary; if everyone holds tight, this will be over shortly," Hardgrove said.
