Crews Clean Up Popeyes Cooking Oil Spill

Waste oil was spilled on the Merritt Boulevard restaurant's parking lot during a scheduled pickup.

Baltimore County Fire Department and Maryland Department of the Environment crews responded Sunday to a cooking oil spill at the Popeyes restaurant on Merritt Boulevard.

"There was a scheduled waste oil pickup and oil was spilled onto the parking lot," Baltimore County Public Safety spokeswoman Det. Cathy Batton said Monday. "Crews were dispatched and an absorbent was used to clean up the mess."

Crews were dispatched to the restaurant at about 2:17 p.m., Batton said.

Different spills require different cleanup treatments and MDE was called in to assist because oil cannot be cleaned up with water.

"Using water to clean up an oil spill just makes it more slick," Batton said. "MDE was on the scene to help with the cleanup."

On Monday, there was still no known reason for the spill, according to Batton.
