Update: Son Charged With Attempted Murder Of Mother In Arson

Firefighters responded to call in Eastview shortly before 11 am. Wednesday.

Baltimore County Police have arrested and charged an Eastview man with attempted murder after he allegedly choked his mother and then started a fire in her bedroom while she was unconscious.

Gordon Robert Jenkins, 23, of the 7900 block of E. Baltimore St., has been charged for the attempted murder of his mother, Teresa Marie Hamel, 47.

Wednesday, at approximately 10:47 a.m., Baltimore County Police responded to a dwelling fire at a home at 7919 E. Baltimore St. Officers were met by the victim, identified as Hamel, who also resides at the location.

According to police, she told arriving officers that her son entered her bedroom and began choking her until she loss consciousness.

The victim further told police that when she gained consciousness, she found her bedroom and clothes on fire. Hamel then fled from the house and called for help.

Teresa Marie Hamel was taken to Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, where she is currently in critical but stable condition.  

Gordon Robert Jenkins has been charged with first-degree arson, attempted murder, first-degree assault and second-degree assault. He is being held in the Baltimore County Detention with bail denied.

Elise Armacost, a spokeswoman for the Baltimore County Fire Department, said last Wednesday the fire had been ruled an arson by fire investigators and that the matter had been turned over to the Baltimore County Police Department.

The fire was contained to the rowhouse where the woman was burned.
