Fire at Vacant Fort Howard Hospital Building

A blaze in the lobby of the former military hospital is under investigation.

Baltimore County firefighters were called Monday morning to a fire at a vacant building at the former Veterans Affairs hospital at Fort Howard.

The one-alarm blaze, in the lobby of an empty six-story building, was dispatched at 7:21 a.m., and was under control by 7:42 a.m., said Baltimore County Fire Department spokeswoman Lynn W. Mullahey.

The former Fort Howard Hospital is located at 9600 North Point Road. It is currently home to a VA outpatient clinic, which was not affected by the fire and remains open Monday.

Firefighters from Baltimore County station No. 9 Edgemere, No. 57 in Sparrows Point, No. 6 in Dundalk and No. 15 in Eastview, as well as volunteers from North Point Edgemere, Wise Avenue and Middle responded.

No one was injured.

Fire investigators were sent to the scene, but the cause of the fire has not yet been determined, Mullahey said.

The Fort Howard property, owned by the Veterans Administration, is currently being planned for development as a veteran and senior citizen residential community.

Last month, in Edgemere were ruled arsons.
