Man Dies After Jumping off I-695 Overpass in Edgemere

A man in his 30s committed suicide near the former Bethlehem Steel property, police said.

UPDATE (3:55 p.m.) A Dundalk man died Wednesday night after jumping off an Interstate-695 overpass near North Point Boulevard in Edgemere, according to Baltimore County police.

Baltimore County police identified the victim as Tommy Andrew Willig, 38, and said he was from the Dundalk area, but did not provide an address.

Police Sgt. Benjamin Yohe said officers found the victim and applied first aid until emergency medical personnel responded, but he was pronounced dead at scene.

"It was a suicide," said Yohe, who estimated the man was in his 30s.

He added that county police had received a 911 call, believed to be from a motorist, about a man standing on the I-695 overpass.

"By the time officers located him, he was already on the ground," Yohe said.

Yohe said the man fell at least 30 feet.

The original call came in at approximately 7:15 p.m., Yohe said.

The man was found near railroad tracks below the overpass, near North Point Boulevard, close to the former Bethlehem Steel plant and property in Sparrows Point.
