Man Killed in Dundalk Scooter Crash is Identified

Dale John Updegraff, 47, died about an hour after the collision Sunday at Trappe and Church roads.

Baltimore County police have identified the man killed in a scooter crash in Dundalk on Sunday.

Dale John Updegraff, 47, of the 3700 block of North Point Road, was pronounced dead at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center at 1:07 p.m. Sunday, where he was taken after the crash, according to Louise Rogers-Feher, a police spokeswoman.

Baltimore County police and fire personnel responded to the intersection of Church and Trappe roads  shortly after 12 p.m. on Oct. 21,for a report of a collision between a car and a scooter, according to a statement from Cpl. John Wachter.

A preliminary police investigation shows that a Pontiac Vibe was making a left turn from westbound Trappe Road onto Church Road.

The scooter was traveling eastbound on Trappe Road at Church, according to Wachter. The scooter was struck by the Vibe as its driver was making the left turn onto Church Road.

The Baltimore County Police Department crash team is investigating the incident, according to Wachter.

The Vibe driver's name is not being released while the collision is still under investigation, according to Rogers-Feher.

"This information is from a preliminary report," she said Monday. "They will do a full investigation."

It's really sad to read this story. After all the years of scooters all over the place with unlicensed, uninsured, careless drivers, this tragedy occurs just after new laws were placed into effect to protect both scooter drivers and vehicles. Just like motorcycles, lower visibility vehicles should be a priority to larger vehicle owners. We have to share the road with bicycles and other methods of transportation. It's a shame to read about this.

I really agree with you about this story. It is very sad. However, it is not always possible to see scooters and other small objects moving faster than pedestrians. Call it programming or whatever you like but the tendency is to ingore smaller objects such as this as pedestrians moving more slowly and not at the speeds these travel. I can attest to this by several experiences in my personal life. Both by others who mentioned that they just didn't see motorcycles etc until the very last minute and by my own experience with this. And like I said I don't know completely why this occurs other than the mind bend of expecting the smaller objects to be moving at slower speeds as if they were pedestrians. This is a well documented issue. Many motorcyclists can attest to this as well with stories about how cars just pulled out in front of them. And how they had to be very defensive at intersections and other areas where collisions might occur. I'm not sure whether law can solve this particular issue. I would like to see more solutions such as special lanes or off-road places where these vehicles could operate. I do agree that motorists should be as aware as possible of the possibilities of smaller scooter like vehicles being present. But again these type vehicles are more the exception in daily driving. It's quite a conundrum.

By the way, many of those people who Mr. Day asserts cannot see small objects moving slowly seem to have no trouble seeing me well enough to throw bottles and cans at me, or to yell profanities at me for having the gall to legally use the highway on my bicycle.

Oh, how right you are Evets. Jog, bike or just simply walk on the side of roads and you are a target for idiots. Ignore smaller objects? You are driving the vehicle. Look!!!! Al Day, you are just making excuses.

Actually, Sparrows Point isn't dead yet. Kinder-Morgan, the stevedoring outfit seems to be fairlyRead More busy. There recently has usually been a ship docked at the inner basin for loading, scrap presumably, or unloading. Just like YOU just did.
Mike Hunt May 7, 2013 at 03:14 am
Mr. Samm, this situation is nothing like North Korea. WE, the PEOPLE, elected the councilman toRead More represent us, that is correct; however, I DID NOT elect Dundalk United to REPRESENT DUNDALK! They are a group of assholes who want nothing but the same shit in this area. We have to expand our minds if we want something better than we currently have. When they start doing that, let me know!

Your right Buzz last Primary no choice.Let's have republicans changeover and run Democrat forRead More Primary.Dutch did good at first as BC executive he spent near end of term with foot problems etc .Wonder if that was to get him out of section 8 controversy .But Section * came in because the local club wanted to put in a new Dynasty .Lou talked out against section 8 and they grabbed on his RACISM.Dutch didn't have to do anything the machine took it from there .Dutch as a congressman ? I still can't believe no one has puts dots together leak in Security ,New person put in charge to find leaks ,Dutch resigns so new congressman can have his position? Really nothing to do with Denise Koch interview where he told her EVERYTHING about underwear bomber etc. Check dates ,leaks from white house and congress mighty close to Duch interview on channel 13.But then our great investigative media would have told us about that wouldn't they ?

Kevin, the thing that sickens me is the games down at Fort Howard which Dutch supported and theRead More deaths of 20,000 vet at the hands of the backlog at the VA. I can't believe this many people are angry at something so stupid. Dundalk is a cesspool of lowRead More class hicks and would serve Maryland better as a landfill rather than a living area. I was born and raised in Dundalk and I am ashamed to admit that I am from there. I'm so glad I got out at a young age. Let Dundalk die a slow painful death.
