Police Identify Driver in Fiery Fatal Crash Over Patapsco Bridge

The victim was a Montgomery County man, according to police.

Officials have tentatively identified the man killed Monday when his truck went over the bridge on Interstate 95 near Interstate 895, according to a statement from Maryland State Police.

Nathaniel White, 73, of the 6500 block of Westmoreland Avenue in Takoma Park, was pronounced dead at the scene, near Patapsco Valley State Park, police said.

Preliminary investigation indicated that at approximately 11:30 a.m. on Monday, a 2005 Ford truck towing a trailer was headed south on I-95 when the truck and trailer separated for unknown reasons, according to the report from police.

The truck hit the bridge embankment and continued over it when the vehicle became engulfed in flames, police said. It landed below, near River Road in the area of the Baltimore-Howard County line.

The trailer remained on I-95, where police said it blocked two lanes of traffic.

For several hours, I-95 south was closed near the Baltimore-Howard County line due to the severity of the crash, according to police.

The driver was the only person in the vehicle, and his identification is tentative until the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner provides verification through an autopsy, police said.

Neither the vehicle's speed nor the cause of the crash has been determined, according to Maryland State Police, which reported the investigation was ongoing.

Anyone with information about the incident may contact the Maryland State Police Golden Ring Barracks at 410-780-2700.
