Police Officials Mark Crime Victims' Rights Week

An informational display is set up at the North Point Library through April 30.

Baltimore County Police Department officials are recognizing National Crime Victims' Rights Week with a series of events and displays, including one at the North Point Library, through April 30.

Each year since 1981, the federal Office of Victims of Crimes has "helped lead communities throughout the country in their annual observances of National Crime Victims’ Rights Week (NCVRW) by promoting victims’ rights and honoring crime victims and those who advocate on their behalf," according to its website.

This year, the week carries the theme, "Extending the Vision: Reaching Every Victim."

Events and activities create awareness of the types of crime that leave victims in their wake, including domestic violence.

Each year, the week of recognition "revisits crime victims' historic struggle for justice," police department officials said in a press release.

"To the founders of the victims’ rights movement, justice meant that all victims, regardless of geography, demographics, or financial status, would have the rights and services they need in the aftermath of a crime," according to the statement.

Scheduled events "emphasize the message that no one has to be a victim," officials said.

The week also offers the chance to memorialize or victims of crime.
