Holabird Avenue Reopens After Water Main Break

A water main break on Holabird Avenue closed the road between Dundalk Avenue and Sollers Point Road today.

UPDATE (4:30 p.m.): A 10-inch break beneath Holabird Avenue near Dundalk Avenue and Bill’s Café that caused water outages and a traffic closure today has been repaired, and the road is now open to traffic.

Kurt Kocher, a public information supervisor with Baltimore City Department of Public Works, said this afternoon that main repairs were completed well ahead of schedule.

Holabird Avenue reopened between Dundalk Avenue and Sollers Point Road by 4 p.m. this afternoon, in time for the evening rush hour.

Kocher said 10 small businesses in area lost water, but no residential consumers.

“Usually what happens this time of year is a shifting of the ground when there is a freezing and thawing cycle,” Kocher said. “The pipes don’t freeze and the water doesn’t freeze, but the ground around the main shifts. Many of these mains have been in place for decades and decades—we’re looking to replace and refurbish many of the them.”

Kocher said water may initially be cloudy after water service is restored.

Kocher advised when a break occurs, businesses and residents should remove the faucet aerators and allow the water to run for a short period to let any sediment flow through the system.
