Baltimore County To Offer Aid to Laid-Off Steelworkers

Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz offers assistance to RG Steel workers.

Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz launched an outreach initiative to assist RG Steel employees laid-off as a result of idling the Sparrows Point facility's primary steelmaking operations.

"This is a stressful time for RG Steel workers and their families. Baltimore County and the United Steel Workers have come together to help RG Steel workers find the services they need to help deal with financial, emotional and career issues," said Kamenetz in a press release.

The United Steelworkers (USW) Union Local 9477 Union Hall will hold an information fair on Jan. 12, 11 a.m.  to 3 p.m. at 550 Dundalk Avenue.

The session will offer presentations about unemployment insurance, USW benefits and healthcare benefits. Information also will be available on topics including coping with stress, housing assistance and foreclosure prevention, career services, and educational opportunities.

"An interagency Baltimore County team has been working with the United Steel Workers Local 9477, State and Federal agencies to assure employees have access to information and resources they need. The Baltimore County departments of economic development, aging, health, social services, planning, and the Community College of Baltimore County collaborated to develop the employee information session and  resource guide."
