Greater Dundalk Named a 'Sustainable Community'

The Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development has named Greater Dundalk a designated "sustainable community area."

The Greater Dundalk, Catonsville/Patapsco and Hillendale/Parkville/Overlea areas received the status, which qualifies entities in those areas to apply for state funds for projects leading to increased economic, transportation and housing choices and environmental improvements, according to a statement from Fronda Cohen, a spokeswoman for Baltimore County Government.

Baltimore County officials "identified these communities as areas in need of revitalization and developed a strategy to encourage and guide local investment," according to the statement.

Each community will "refine these strategies and submit applications to the state requesting funding for specific projects," according to the statement.

Greater Dundalk was noted for its rich history, including its War of 1812 sites. County officials envision enhancing Dundalk's opportunities for heritage tourism based on that history.

The Dundalk Renaissance Corp. will continue its housing rehabilitation efforts, according to the statement. Existing plans also include the effort to link an existing waterfront park with a Turner Station health path.
