Kamenetz Responds to RG Steel's Layoff Announcement

Career consultation and job placement assistance to be offered to laid off workers.

Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz issued the following statement in response to today's announcement that RG Steel plans to idle its steelmaking operations at its Sparrows Point plant and additional plants in West Virginia and Ohio:

"Once again, the hard-working men and women at RG Steel Sparrows Point are facing tough times. We are keenly aware that thousands of workers and their families depend on steel making for their livelihood—plus thousands more who work for suppliers and businesses related to the Sparrows Point mill.

Baltimore County's rapid response workforce development team will be working with RG Steel, the United Steelworkers and our State partners to be sure workers have timely information about all unemployment benefits and resources available to them.  We encourage Sparrows Point workers to take advantage of the free services and workshops available at Baltimore County's workforce development centers. Free career consultation, seminars, and job placement assistance are available at the Eastpoint, Hunt Valley and Liberty Center career centers."

Now all of a sudden he's for the working man. What happened to the special interest deals with the developers and their attorneys. He is working both sides of the lisle. Wonder how many jobs he'll bring back from his trip to Vegas on our dime?

Rapid Response Workforce development team? To do what? Train these people how to sling hamburgers? You realize how many big Business's have vacated Maryland?Maryland is no friend to business,Go to Virginia and you'll see how a real State treats Big Business. Maryland Politicians killed Maryland and you can't blame it on the Republicans or the Conservatives.

The state wants to expand the port of Baltimore well here is their chance. They could bring in larger ships that draw deeper water. Let’s face it the steel mill at Sparrows Point is dead sell off what they can, clean and cap the land and expand our port. Easy access to 695 and 95 and the use of rail lines.
