Sanitation Overflow at Broening Highway Flooding Into Colgate Creek
Baltimore City is reporting a sanitation overflow at 2200 Broening Highway.
UPDATE (6:23 p.m.) A leak Thursday afternoon from a damaged pipe in the area of the 2220 block of Broening Highway has caused an overflow of at least 20,000 gallons of sewage, which is spilling into Colgate Creek.
The Baltimore City Department of Public Works announced the overflow in a press release at 4:46 p.m. Crews remained on the scene, working to correct the problem as of early Thursday evening, said Robert Murrow, communications manager for the Bureau of Public Waste, Department of Public Works.
Murrow said either a valve problem or a blockage inside a pipe not far from a city pumping station is likely the cause of the problem.

“Crews are trying to reroute flow from the broken pipe, back to the pumping station, so they can see what the problem is and repair the pipe,” Murrow said.
The Maryland Department of the Environment and the Baltimore City Health Department have been notified about the incident.

“The Department of Public Works is undertaking a $1 billion rehabilitation of the City’s sanitary system that will protect our urban streams and the Chesapeake Bay while preventing future sewer overflows,” according to the a City Department of Public Works press statement.
