Small Fire Extinguished at Former Seagram's Property

A fire in one of the complex's abandoned buildings was under control in 13 minutes.

Firefighters extinguished a "small building fire" at the former Seagram's Distillery property on Sollers Point Road on Tuesday, according to a Baltimore County Public Safety spokeswoman.

The fire department received a call reporting the fire at 3:56 p.m. Aug. 28 and the blaze was under control by 4:09 p.m., according to spokeswoman Louise Rogers-Feher.

Four engines, two trucks and a battalion chief reported to the scene, Rogers-Fehrer said. There were no reported injuries.

The fire is being investigated by the Baltimore County Fire Department's arson investigation team.

The historic Seagram's buildings, which many residents hoped would be saved and restored in a reclamation project, have crumbled and have been the target of arsonists many times under the stewardship of former owner Frank Scarfield and current owner John Vontran.

Vontran has requested a rezoning of the property so he can build a mixed-use development on the roughly 13-acre parcel.

The Baltimore County Council is set to vote on Comprehensive Zoning Map Process requests at a special session tonight.
